Has anyone on long term thyroid meds had open-heart cardiac repair surgery? Any ideas as to whether it affects thyroid and any need to up/ lower T4/T3 meds? Any reflections/suggestions would be most welcome.

I have not had heart surgery. I wonder if this special circumstance has ever been considered properly by medics? You know I doubt it very much. Hospital treatment and issue of meds always strikes me as completely haphazard - as experienced from the patient end of things. E.g. all medications delivered at the same time and expected all to be taken together. A bit of a problem with thyroid meds.

It used to be one of my jobs to keep tabs on junior doctors instructions when they came to work in the hospital where I worked. Diabetic medication definitely was highlighted as important and instructions given re: that. I don’t recall any instructions re: thyroid medication. But that was many moons ago.

My instinct tells me “change nothing” as best you can under the circumstances you find yourself in. Unless of course someone replies to this who has undergone similar circumstances. Also try asking your doctors.

Hi Bikebabe,

Not sure if I've done these links properly but if you search for Amiodarone on Healthunlocked and filter your results down to just Thyroid UK you'll get lots of relevant information connected to thyroid.

Edited to add:

I've not had heart surgery but have a friend that did and Amiodarone was used post surgery I believe (it was some time ago) The Amiodarone caused him issues with his thyroid.

hi bike babe,I understand long term thyroid problems can effect the mitral valve.I had my thyroid surgery in 1980 and in 2012 had OHS to repair the mitral valve which made a big difference to my health,a year later I went diving with dolphins in Australia. I suggest you read Tears behind closed doors by Diana Holmes ,a nurse who ended up in a wheelchair until being prescribed Armour thyroid within a short time she regained her health, or Stop the thyroid madness. Good luck in your recovery, best regards, carpet king .
