Endo prescribed T3 but GP won't prescribe!!

I have had a long thyroid journey, starting in 1981 with hyperthyroidism following the death of my father. Fast forward to 2000 when I became hypo. Since then I have had varying amounts of thyroxine, and was happy on it until I had breast cancer in 2021. The anti-hormone treatment for preventing recurrence has thrown all my meds into turmoil, and I saw an Endo earlier in the year and he prescribed 5mcg a day alongside 100mcg of thyroxine for three months to see how I fare.

Having gone privately because the GP wouldn't refer me to the probably same Endo on the NHS (not particularly good however) the GP has refused to prescribed the T3. Looking at one site, which showed the massive increase in cost, I can expect to pay £258+-but for how many I don't know. Is there anywhere else I can buy it with my private prescription?

Sounds like you could do with talking to Roseway Labs they are very helpful in this situation and many here make use of them 🤗

Cheaper for you to buy 20mcg tablets and splitting them into quarters

Thousands of U.K. thyroid patients are forced to get T3 on private prescription

Cheapest by far is 20mcg Thybon Henning and cut into 1/4’s to get 5mcg

To qualify for T3 on NHS you would need to see NHS endocrinologist who agrees you have clinical need

Typically over a year’s wait for consultation and, if TSH and Ft4 within range referral often refused

Increasing numbers are being prescribed

Almost 64,000 prescriptions in England in last year

Thybon Henning is £60-£80 per 100 tablets

Typically dose is 5mcg twice or three times per day

Twice day = approximately £12-14 per month

At it's height T3 did cost £258 per box of 28 tablets I think. But the price has dropped dramatically since then.

This link gives you a VERY rough idea of what the NHS is being charged :

For more accurate info on the costs of T3 see helvella 's blog :
