Advice please, re sourcing/dose T3 in England, UK

I've a long history of being on Levothyroxine, for Hypothyroidism. I only feel well when on 150mcgs, most likely due to poor conversion T4 to T3, which I've more recently discovered, after private blood tests and advice on here.

So, a few months ago, GP decided my T4 levels were much too high to accept, ie TSH between 0.02 - 0.08 [0.27 - 4.2]; F4 between 27-30 [10.5 - 22.0];

So, I've gone from 150 mcgs / day up until Aug 2023, when I was decreased to 125mcgs and decreased again, to 100mcgs in Sept 2023

Needless to say, as previous decreases have caused, I have felt rubbish, brain not working properly, unable to perform tasks (mainly on PC) which I've normally been able to do easily; fatigue; lack of energy/motivation. Hence, achieving little during each day so becoming depressed. I'm on long-term antidepressents already!

Having recently managed to find a formula to calculate T4/T3 ratio, I'm clearly very low on the scale.

T3 has run at approx 3.6 - 4.0 on testing privately [3.1 - 6.8] over the past few years, giving a ratio of 0.72 and 0.64 in 2017; 0.62 in Sept 2023

Saw GP again y'day, with recent blood results, based on 100mcgs/day, TSH 3.22. No other thyroid tests performed, as TSH within normal range [0.27-4.2], so no F4 result, unfortunately. However, I think the TSH says it all.

GP happy with 'numbers', of course! I'm definitely not and told her so. Eventually, she offered an extra 25mcgs "at weekends" which, I suppose, would me, at most, an extra 50mcgs per week!!! Some offer, eh? A verbal exchange definitely followed, I got very upset of course and, at the end of this, I was given prescription of extra 25mcgs/day, making my total dose of Levothyroxine 125mcgs/day. Well, not quite what I wanted but 1/2 way there. Also, GP will write to Endo for advice re acceptable levels of T4, and I've asked to include the possibility of a trial on some T3 too. Also, a referral to Psychs to see if they can add in another med re antidepressant plus they can prescribe Levothyroxine, hence take any responsibility for 'out of range' F4. Ummm...

So, I've taken the decision, at last, to treat myself if GPs/NHS won't. Could I please ask for suggestions/advice re sourcing T3 (obviously via private message) and also on dosage. I appreciate I should probably require less Levothyroxine if on T3 but what sort of doses would I like start at and what dose tablets are available etc.

I really appreciate all the advice I've been given here. I've considered but decided against, seeing a potentially T3-friendly Endo privately as it would involve places well out of East Anglia so I'd rather start off this way and see how I go.

Many thanks to all and apologies for this being so lengthy ;)

As requested replies with any information by PM only as we are not allowed to name sources in the group. This post will be closed to further replies.

I'd recommend getting a full thyroid panel of TSH, FT4 & FT3 before starting T3, also make sure that all vitamin levels are OPTIMAL. Post results in a new post for recommendations.

You may not need to drop any Levo now that your dose is already low but we need to see all the right numbers from the blood test.

When you receive a message with a recommendation, please do not assume it is genuine.

First, check the profile of the member that sent you the message. Are they a long term member with an active forum posting history? Or are they a recently joined member with little or no posting history?

Once you have what you think may be a genuine recommendation, please message a forum admin to ask whether the admin team have any feedback on the source you've been given.

⚠️ Don't part with your much needed money until you are as sure as you can be that the source is genuine.

Scammers often join the forum and post a 'fake' story about their thyroid journey, that includes mention of self sourcing their thyroid meds. This is to encourage members to ask them where they purchase their medication without prescription.

As your GP has inappropriately reduced levothyroxine dose far too much you are highly likely have vitamin deficiency too now

BEFORE considering booking any consultation…..get bloods retested including thyroid antibodies and vitamin levels 6-8 weeks after being on 125mcg daily

Which brand of levothyroxine are you using

What vitamin supplements are you taking

ESSENTIAL to maintain optimal vitamin levels
