LOOKING FOR ARTICLES SUPPORTING A SUPPRESSED TSH WHEN ON NDT

Hi.

I am looking for published articles that support the following

“the tsh will be suppressed despite normal t4 and normal t3 in patients taking NDT medication”

I am looking for supportive articles to use with my dr who is struggling to accept my NDT dose and believes I am over medicated despite normal t4 and normal t3 levels

thank you as always

NIKEGIRL,

I know you want scientific research papers but I’m not sure there is much more than what tats has offered you in your previous post because the TSH hold is so sacred not many are willing to put themselves on the line. You liked the Canadian article and for your info Tania Smith dissects papers and puts together her learnings into blogs.

She explains how the hypothalamus and pituitary respond primarily to the local rate of T4-T3 conversion. Firstly after taking our meds the FT3:FT4 ratio quickly changes as transporters carry the hormones to the pituitary and hypothalamus at different rates. Then secondly these tissues do not express many enzymes that can take apart T3 before it reaches receptors.

These combined actions result in what the body sees as a T3 build-up (even when it remains low else where in the body) and what induces that misinterpretation of an overactive thyroidal T3 secretion rate resulting in TSH never recovering. Hence, even if we multi-dose smaller amounts, the TSH may still remain low, and the systems are so sensitive it even happens with NDT that is bound to thyroglobulin.

Thanks Radd. I got the Canadian article and it’s brilliant. I tried to down load Tatts but it didn’t come. Sorry

Here's another of Tania Smith's excellent articles. Again, it's not in itself a paper that you can present to your doctor as proof that suppressed TSH can be acceptable. But it does give some excellent pointers that may be helpful for your next blood draw.
