I finally confessed to my GP that I am using 1 grain of Thai NDT with 50mcg levothyroxine. I then had an annual blood test.
My GP called me to say that my TSH was 0.01 and that he felt it was too low. He said that my T4 was however ‘in range’ and said that the NHS do not routinely test T3. He has referred my results to an endocrinologist (which I’m thankful for) because he said he worried about my heart health.
I’m hoping that the endocrinologist will be able to test T3 for me.
I still have some lingering symptoms with NDT in the mix, but feel 90% better than on Levothyroxine alone.
Is it ok to have a very low TSH if you feel well?

Simply put? Yes. I think so. Mine is well below range and I’m only on T4. Whether the endo (who I assume will be an NHS endo) will agree or test T3 is, unfortunately, a lottery. If you’re very lucky you may get one of the rare enlightened ones. Or, you may get one who goes into total meltdown at the mention of NDT. 🤸🏿♀️ 🥛
Thanks MissGrace. I’m sure that I can enlighten them after being on this site 😂. I’m going to stand my ground as I feel well at the moment. It’s not like they can stop me taking the NDT!
Such a shame that GPs have so little knowledge of such a common disease.
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test
Is this how you do your tests?
On NDT you MUST test FT3 at same time as TSH and FT4
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
Hi, I have my bloods regularly checked using Medichecks. It costs around £30 to have your TSH, T3 and T4 checked. I think the regular price is around £39, but you can usually find a discount code online, or the company itself often has a promotion on. I find it useful to know what my results are without involving my GP. Medichecks uses reputable laboratories regulated by the Care Quality Commission, so reliable. Good luck.
