Does Magnesium need a big gap around thyroid meds?

I currently try to leave 4 hours either side of both iron and magnesium capsules and thyroid meds. Do I need to do that with magnesium?

At least four hours between thyroid hormones and magnesium - some say six hours! :)

What happens otherwise? Does the magnesium prevent thyroid uptake? My functional doctor advises one hour, magnesium when starting to prepare for bed and thyroid when I finally get there for overnight absorption and better sleep

Taking magnesium closer to thyroid hormone will affect the absorption, so not much point, is there! lol

That’s not good advice.

I know it’s difficult to remember these ‘gaps’ between various medications, supplements and thyroid hormones

Thyroid Hormones

At least +2 hours. Vitamins except D and any medication

At least +4 hours Vitamin D, K2 Calcium, Magnesium, iron

Remember to separate Magnesium and Calcium (if you take it) as they have the same receptors.

As I take my thyroid hormones in the morning, I have less of a problem than those who dose throughout the day.

I take magnesium a couple of hours before bedtime and feel myself relaxing and getting sleepy an hour or so after taking.

I set reminders on my phone. That helps 😉

What about progesterone I wonder. Presumably the same. But progesterone and magnesium is my sleeping cocktail.

in reply to Pearlteapot

I think Progesterone probably 2 hrs from Thyroid meds.

I meant progesterone and magnesium

Oh. Should think you can take those together.

Got to draw the line somewhere or you’ll be like a walking alarm clock 😂

Already am. A stopped clock is right twice a day.

That’s my saying! 😂

Darn it! Thanks.

No chance of 6 hours as I have to take iron too and I dose 3 times a day with NDT at the moment.

Tricky isn’t it. I was just starting to enjoy night dosing the levo. I read here once that magnesium doesn’t have to be taken at night for the sleep benefits but it doesn’t feel that way to me. I’m convinced taking it at night helps me sleep. Taking it earlier wouldn’t help anyway as I take god knows how many supplements throughout the day.

I find magnesium helps sleep so much when taken just before bed. I used to take it at lunchtime but it’s not the same.

Just read hjh88’s post below and it’s reminded me that I did have it transdermally when I did night time dosing of thyroid meds

It depends what type of magnesium you're taking. Magnesium Malate won't help you with sleep, but Magnesium Glycinate will.

If you’re struggling to squeeze magnesium in taken orally, you could try either Epsom salts in a bath or foot soak, or a magnesium oil, lotion or balm. As it’s absorbed through the skin, you don’t get the clash with other medications. BetterYou have a few variants but sure there are others. Not sure for the quality of ingredients but I’ve been trying to get hold of a Neom magnesium balm to swap in on occasion for something a little more of a treat.
