This is just an anecdote, so feel free to ignore, point, and laugh at it. :)

I used to have palms of my hands and soles of my feet which were blotchy red and orange.

When I started getting involved with thyroid related info I discovered that vitamin A can cause issues for us.

Many supplements actually contain beta-carotene and they pretend it is vitamin A. But it isn't. Beta-carotene is a provitamin i.e. is is a precursor to vitamin A. In order to create real vitamin A the beta-carotene has to be converted to the real vitamin.

And guess what... People with hypothyroidism can't do that conversion very well at all.

When I found out about this I bought a bottle of real vitamin A and took it for about a month. My palms and soles stopped being orange and red as, presumably, my body disposed of any unconverted beta-carotene and gave me some real vitamin A.

I didn't continue to take vitamin A because overdoses of it are bad for the liver. And a warning for pregnant women - too much vitamin A is dangerous for babies in the womb.

Whether any of this has anything to do with your red palms I couldn't say. But it might be worth it for you to do some research.

I too have palmar erythema. I had a GP appointment some weeks ago and mentioned this - he barely looked at it, continued to look at PC screen and just said " it's probably to do with being hypothyroid". I got the feeling he was at the end of a busy day and wasn't helpful in any way. I initially thought I had carotenemia (Dr Google) but then realised I had no orange tinge to the skin. What research I have done on line, it appears there is a link between hypothyroidism and palmer erythema. Certainly something to mention when you next see GP.

Hi

I have something like this. Very red palms and pains in individual fingers, all of a sudden sometimes.

I have Raynaud’s in winter and so I know I suffer from poor circulation sometimes. Do you?

In the summer I don’t suffer from this much but increasingly (this summer) I have sudden twinges / itches in individual fingers, twinges in a couple of my joint and one knuckle and red palms. I don’t know why these come and go.

I don’t know if this is what the condition you are describing looks like.

I did have cold fingers and feet before having thyroid problems but never had these twinges or redness in my hands before.

Not what you're looking for?
