Can thyroid cause red palms?

Amethyst91 profile image

I never had bright red palms but kinda pink/ red my whole life. I had thyroid iodine last year to kill my thyroid and since have had red palms. My levels are normal with meds but I still have done mild symptoms. My endocrinologist doesn’t think thyroid though.

That is a very good question! Wish I knew the answer because I have them, too. Don't really know how long I've had them. It was just something I suddenly noticed quite a few years ago, but I don't know if it had been there before, or had suddenly arrived - if you see what I mean.

I've asked various doctors, but they don't know. lol Of course they don't!

What do you mean by 'normal' when talking about your blood test results? Do you just mean somewhere in the range? Because that's what doctors mean, they don't actually mean actually normal. They have no idea what that is. Best if you can give us the actual numbers (such a useful word 'actual'!): results and ranges. Then we can tell you how normal they are. But, if you still have some symptoms, I doubt they are normal for you.

Doctors never think your symptoms are to do with thyroid because they don't know what hypo symptoms are! :)

Thank you for the replies. I’m worried about it being my thyroid or liver but since my endocrinologist told me levels are normal she pointed to the liver. Normal is in a range I’m on 125mcg levo once a say and 5 Mcg t3 twice a day. I had radioiodine due to my overactive thyroid causing a lot of palpitations. My thyroid completely died pretty fast after the treatment and I went very hypo and developed so many new symptoms. I can’t remember when I really noticed the red but for the last month they have been red with no itching. I do definitely itch everywhere else though and since the radioiodine last year I get eczema patches around my eyelids and bottom of eyes, currently have one on my left eyelid that’s been there for a month .

I'm very sorry to hear that you're suffering so badly. Your end may consider your levels to be 'normal' - which just means 'in-range', so not very helpful - but that doesn't mean that they're right for you.

I would suggest that you post your results and ranges on here, and let people have a look.

Have you had the liver tested?

I’ve had red pinkish palms most of my adult life too. Jo xx

I’ve had red palms at least 15 years that I started noticing, Maybe my whole life . Not sure. Mentioned it to a doctor back then and he didn’t seemed concerned. I guess I’m okay it being that many years. Do have slightly elevated liver function now, but not 3 to 15 years ago. So it can’t be caused by that. All other bloodwork is in normal range. I just try to ignore it. But I have noticed over the years that quite a few people are walking around with pink palms. Who knows.

Goodness, thank you for posting this....so it's not just me!! I've been wondering about this for some time...mine started at least 6 months ago, can't remember exactly.

The red patch is on my left palm...it is itchy and dry and started in the hollow of my palm as a smallish patch but is very slowly spreading.

I haven't asked my doctor about it because I suspect, " I don't know" would be the diagnosis. I had the same diagnosis after I'd been taken to A&E with abdominal pain and scanned/tested.....that has turned out to be an Chronic/Embedded UTI... discovered after I read about the work of a Prof in London....I'm now being (controversially - sound familiar ) treated by an understanding medic with long term low dose antibiotics

I've tried different OTC ointments and E45 Itch Relief eases the itch but the red patch remains. At first I thought it was an allergy but didn't immediately think of hypo

I have a form of thyroid hormone resistance causing cellular hypothyroidism and need high dose T3-only and am now convinced that a number of my health problems are the result of this....including the Chronic/Embedded UTI. Suggest that to a medic and the answer is likely to be firmly in the negative! One doctor I saw had never heard of T3!

I have a few issues on my left side only....eg ear, eye, gut. Coincidence...or not!!

Sorry, I don't have an answer other than agreeing with greygoose that you have a full thyroid test ....in thyroid terms "normal" is an anathema!!

Take care

DD

Mine has never itched or been sore or anything. It's just red.

I have this red palms right now... about 2 weeks I've noticed I'm new to all this but does mention red palms overactive on nhs site not sure though I'm no expert.

I have this problem and have for some time - even prior to having thyroid problems.

It’s called Palmar Erythmar. An underlying symptom, not a condition. Can be hyperthyroidism, liver problems, many cases idiopathic.

It's that condition called, " we don't know the cause and the treatment is trial and error"!

in reply toDippyDame

No DD. This one’s called, “It’s not uncommon but we’re not sure what causes it”. A variant of the other one

i was reading Theodore Kocher's 1907 nobel prize lecture the other day .. im sure i remember 'red palms' are in it somewhere (as a clinical clue to hypo diagnosis) healthunlocked.com/thyroidu... (the original link in this old post is defunct , but i put a new one in my reply at the bottom )

Which reminds me .. i only read the first half ... it's very long , but brilliant so far.

Sorry just checked the NHS on this and it wasn’t what I had. My skin was itchy and flaking, it had a similar name though and has gone now.

Thanks for posting this - I originally thought this symptom was related to estrogen excess but I now believe it is thyroid excess as it is a symptom of Thyrotoxicosis. I get palmar erythema about 2 hours after taking my meds but it fades during the day
