Vitamin D test

I have been taking Vitamin D+K2 for a few months now, while in Tesco today I noticed a at home vitamin D test so I brought one. I have just done the test and it showed only 1 line which says vitamin D levels are excessive and I should contact my doctor, how reliable are these at home finger price tests?

Should I stop my vitamin D+K2?

Should I contact my GP?

I remember these cassettes type tests being discussed in the past. As they don’t give a reading they don’t help much.

However, now you have done one you can ask the GP about excessive Vit D and they’ll test, say you are worried about toxicity.

I did this with zinc and when I had my GP face to face consultation after waiting 6 weeks this week (despite a private test showing it was low) she asked me for a list of what I take and is testing everything. She isn’t sure the lab will do everything she asked but she put it all on the list. On the basis that the NHS should have a level on record to compare against for the future.

Worth a try, if not I think it’s £29’with Monitor my health which is an NHS lab.

Slightly cheaper at £31.00 (used to be £27.00!) but better still as has been suggested ask your GP.

Was the Vit D prescribed by your doctor? If it was I'd have thought he should check at least once a year. Mine was originally prescribed by an endo and checked every 6 months. He then passed me back to GP who would only do it every 3 years. Since all the hassle with T3 prices I've ended up under the endo again and he now tests it every 6 months. I feel happier knowing what my levels are.

I don't expect he'd object to testing then if you have done that other test.

I’d tell your Dr you’ve done a private test and it was over range and to contact your Dr. They should then give you a retest on the NHS. Then you can see how high it is. Then reduce or stop your supplements and be careful going out in the sun for a bit.

4000 iu is a lot per day, how about taking it every other day or lowering the dose, to 1000iu which is plenty
