Update re: decision on RAI

Hi everyone,

I posted last year regarding feeling nervous about being referred for RAI.

I just thought I'd update on my situation. I didn't go ahead with it and I am so glad I gave myself some time to do further research and to adopt a wait and see approach. My TSH was low but perceptible and my T4 and T3 were in range. The main reason for referral was the somewhat controversial opinion that subclinical hyperthyroidism can be a risk factor for osteoporosis (I already have established osteoporisis and have been treated sucessfully for that for the past 10 years - no fractures so far, touch wood!)

So I saw a different endocrinologist at my yearly clinic appointment last week. My TSH, though still outside the normal range has improved a little - it was 0.13 last year and is now O.29. My T4 and T3 are still in range. She said that she was quite happy with these numbers and to wait and monitor for the forseeable - thought she would definitely recommend RAI if my TSH becomes supressed or close to it.

Thank you for all your feedback in the past🙂

Out if curiosity before you were diagnosed with subclinical hyperthyroidism where you taking medication for osteoporosis ?

Yes I was. I tried a couple of the treatments briefly for the osteoporosis and on a visit to my GP she happened to notice that I had a small goitre. My numbers at that stage were normal, but a couple of years down the line my TSH lowered.

I am currently on infusions of Zoledronate due to being unable to tolerate the oral bisphosphonates.

I bet your medication for osteoporosis has messed with your thyroid levels causing your subclinical hyperthyroidism… might be something to research just out of curiosity to see if others have experienced your issue.

what is the name of your medication and how much are you taking?

I too was having the same infusions as Silversnow for some time and am now on medication for hypothyroidism so possibly not down to Zoledronate. I would say it’s an excellent option as oral medication for osteoporosis is vile.

Yes I agree Joan 🙂 Just one dose of a weekly oral medication (Risedronate) really messed up my stomach.

I have a family history of thyroid/goitre issues, so not caused by medication in my opinion.
