Just wanted to say thank you Slow Dragon for all your advice...You told me to take all the vitamins and b12 test privately after i had my throid results.I did just that told my gp of my results(although im not sure doing that is really appreciated). My private test said my b12 and vitamin d was low.So the gp sent of for tests on vitamin d, b12, a didbetes test,my thyroid and a vitamin d cortisol test(not really sure what that means as it was seperate to vitaminnd test and. Ha1c test( nit sure what that is ).Had a text from the doctors that i have low vitamin d ( which i had to buy tablets for) and low folate which i have been prescribed a 3 months course.I though that this was all my blood tests shown but the next day i was called because the gp wants to see me regarding my blood results. So i am assuming they need to talk to me about my other results, as they have already addressed my vitamin d and folate.I just want to say thank you so much for all your help.Without you i would never of been tested for these things. It is truly aporeciated ,as i have been feeling quite unwell. And low folate alone can cause this.I am unsure of my thyroid results but will know more at my appointment.I would like to know the levels of folate and vitamin d tests along with others. Also slowdragon just wondered if low folate is the same a b12.As i just got a txt message i have not be able to ask.Thank you so much again, Best wishes

Folate is a B vitamin (B9) and folate and B12 work together

When folate is low B12 often is too (or vice versa)

Recent Medichecks results

Folate. 6.64 ( 3.89)

Active Vitamin b12. 54.5.(37.5_150)

Active B12 below 70 is too low

NHS only ever test serum B12 range usually 180-700 approx

Optimal serum B12 is over 500

Vitamin d. 26. (50-200)

Very unlikely vitamin D has improved significantly on NHS test

If vitamin D was under 25nmol GP should prescribe loading dose of 300,000iu vitamin D over 6-8 weeks

That’s approximately 5000iu per day for 8 weeks

or

7000iu per day for 6 weeks

Vitamin D between 25nmol - 50nmol GP should prescribe 1600iu per day for 6 months

As you’re only one point away from 25nmol suggest you take equivalent of loading dose vitamin D

Retest in 8 weeks

Details of vitamin supplements as previous replies in last post

iBS and bloating is extremely common hypothyroid symptom due to low stomach acid and poor gut function

Have you had coeliac blood test

Low stomach acid can be a common hypothyroid issue

Wow...had coeliac blood test two years ago and it was fine apparently. But have been going to the doctors for 3 years due to severe disstention that has never gone down in 3yrs.I look pregnant.Have a very hard time eating because of this and i like food.Very strange thing is that i have put on a.stone and a half and hardly eat.Which i cannot understand. My legs are twice the size they used to be and it just cannot be from food its impossoble.Sure a child eats more daily that i can due to this disstention. The only thing i thought it could be is because i hardly eat my metabolism has changed. But nearly 2 stone is alot.Never been sent to a gastroenterologist all this time. After 3yrs of this. They said it may be ibs but that was put as a reason for blood tests 'severe bloating'.After 3yrs i want to know for definate not just it may be.I eat and when i do i feel as if food just doesnt digest, im bloated cant fit anymore food on top and feel sick...although i do not get tummy pain just massive disstention/ bloating

Regarding your distension, have you been tested for sibo? H plyori? Yeast or fungal overgrowth?

Rachel20 profile image
Rachel20 in reply toImaaan

No have never heard of that.I think I should be tested for much more or see a specialist at least, especially not being able to eat anything.I really should be 6 stone with my food consumption.I feel like I'm battling away for years to be heard really.I was sent for one ultrasound that shown another of gas then they just left it.No further tests or action or anything. Will look that up thank you.

I tested negative for coeliac but my bloating went down when I went gluten free. The test for coeliac picks up an allergy - however it doesn't show an intolerance - its all a question of severity.

Even though you eat very little hypos can put on weight. We need calories to convert T4 to T3. If we don't take in enough calories we don't convert well which leads to lower ft3. Lower ft3 means we are more hypo and symptoms such as weight gain worsen.

So

Weight gain is extremely common hypothyroid symptom, even if eating very little

Request testing for SIBO and H Pylori if not been tested yet

Gluten intolerance is EXTREMELY common

Strongly recommend trialling strictly gluten free diet at least 3-6 months

hi Rachel with this sort of bloating you’re experiencing, it’s worth asking your doctor to check your ovaries. A cyst can cause swollen abdomen/constipation/feeling full after eating only a little. They are probably absolutely fine, so don’t panic, but ask for an ultrasound just to be sure. 🤗

No your quite right..i did have one over a year and half ago, but really think everything should be checked out now properly its gone on so long but had gotten much worse. Thanks for the advice.Best wishes

Yes, this site is wonderful, I don’t know what I would have done had I not discovered it back when I had Graves disease.

Now that you’ve been tested Rachel20 ask for and keep copies of all your results along with their lab ranges. Among other things it shows you are taking a keen interest in and responsibility for your health.

slowdragon helped me return to health also by pointing me in the right direction when no NHS Dr could or would help me. I followed her advise to go a particular private only endocrinologist. I was diagnosed almost immediately and prescribed the correct medication and treatment. I’ve not looked back and now feel very well. Thank you Slowdragon 😀👍.

Hba1c is diabetes (blood sugar) test and if slightly high they should repeat before diagnosing you or maybe investigate more although if very high you will probably be put straight on medication if GP thinks you cannot now control this through diet (not sure how often this happens to be honest as just have a friend who was put straight on meds as hers was very high, sent off to diabetic clinic afterwards) … as we age us women (well most) will experience less tolerance for carbs and high sugar foods and we cannot control this area as well, usually diet will need addressing possibly lifestyle changes.

Although it’s really necessary to keep our hormones in check and balances for best outcome …I personally really get bit peeved with this… for 7 years my Blood sugar has been creeping up but ok with in normal although had odd test in pre diabetes range …and this gets more attention than my ongoing symptoms for diagnosed autoimmune condition’s along with rubbish blood test results saying as much and where I have given proof of these are all connected still by Primary care (GP) I’m under medicated. I’m now under endocrinologist so she won’t budge at minute to change anything 🙄…but I probably won’t see this endocrinologist after my next visit later this weeks as I’m assuming everything is ok, or may say I’m borderline prediabetic…I definitely have had blood sugar (insulin) issues since teens, but hypos not high blood sugar… obviously age weight and perimenopause now interfere with tolerance… and I need to adjust my diet even more.

Cortisol blood test isn’t the most accurate test, mine was good it’s usually done at 9am. If one hormone is out another maybe. I’ve just had synacthen test for low cortisol but I fit more the camp of high cortisol in symptoms… but cortisol can go hand in hand with thyroid issues. Cortisol also cause insulin problems too.

It’s required to test for B12 before taking folic acid as taking folic acid can mask a B12 deficiency… as they’ve prescribed folic acid maybe you will also have B12 injections or supplements if nhs results have shown same results.

You can ring surgery for you’re results if you haven’t online access to your records you can request them, meanwhile they can provide paper copies. I wouldn’t worry about stepping on their toes re getting private results, just say you thought you was doing them a favour as know your so busy 🫣

Re cysts I still get hormonal ovarian cysts at 57 I’ve had few scans nothing been advised, although also diagnosed with adenomyosis and they hope as transitions to post menopause all will be ok…whenever that will be 🤦🏻‍♀️
