Hi,

I have Hashimoto's and one of my daughters has done the basic thyroid test with Medichecks.

Could I ask opinions on these results please?

Range is in brackets

TSH: 19.7 (0.2 to 4.2)

Free T3: 5.8 (3.1 to 6.8)

Free thyroxine: 14.4 (12 to 22)

Goodness, looks like she's hypothyroid with a TSH of 19. I'd show those results to her GP who will likely want to repeat the test, get them to add in antibody tests too at the same time and bloods for ferritin, folate, B12 and D3.

Yes, the high TSH worried me, even though I have some knowledge. GP visit definitely needed

Hopefully you've caught it fairly early and at least with a number like that they will take notice and not make her wait for medication. She must be very tired.

Presumably your daughter doesn't have a diagnosed thyroid condition?

As you have Hashi's, did she not get the Medichecks test which includes thyroid antibodies? It's quite likely your daughter may have Hashi's too.

Did she do the test as we advise:

* No later than 9am

* Water only before the test

* No biotin in a stand alone supplement, hair/nail supplement or B Complex for 3-7 days before the thyroid test

Show the results to GP who will most likely want to do their own test, she should ask for thyroid antibodies to be included, she should tell them that you have autoimmune thyroid disease so antibodies ought to be checked.

I'll ask her about supplements

I've 4 daughters and 2 of them have been tested for thyroidism and it's come up negative (yay). I suppose I didn't really think she'd have anything more than a "normal" set of results. Wish I'd got her the antibody test. Hindsight, huh?

She's at Uni, so I'll see if she has access to a GP. Coming home would be better but we all know what it's like to get an appointment.

She doesn't take any

Definitely a TSH of 19 and not 1.9? Might be worth double checking—but then again, her GP will almost certainly want to run their own thyroid function tests.

If it is 19, at the moment her thyroid is managing to respond but that probably won’t last…
