Why do GPs/practices not listen?

I asked for a thyroid test recently and have been honest that I'm taking Metavive. But I might as well have said, "I'm taking fairy dust" for the interest shown in taking this into account.

Me: And the thyroid test(s)?

Them: It's normal.

Me: What's the numbers?

Them: 3.61

Me: I'm taking something for thyroid already

Them: (No response, and on to something else)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe next time I'll say I'm already taking something for thyroid - heroin!

Maybe (although I'm sceptical) I'll get some response.

Best wishes

Fiona

Because they think they already know it all so there's nothing you can tell them, and they make up their mind what's wrong with you - usually hypochondria - before you even walk in the door!

Yep! I may try the heroin thing to get their attention although I'm still doubtful.

3.61.....must have been the price of their morning coffee!!

3.61 ...of what?

Units, units, units! ... echoed round the classroom

Do "they" never learn!

Sorry....got a severe dose of that cynical bug this morning!

No wonder you are sceptical.

Hope you get your thyroid problem resolved soon

Maybe a sprinkling of that fairy dust on "their" head might help.

Smile....it confuses "them"

The fairy dust is a great idea... always a risk that they may drag me away! ... There are brobably no beds so should be fine!

Kind regards

Fiona

I've often seen it on here - don't ask the doctor, ask reception for your results. Ask them to print them out and go and collect a day or two later.

Even better, if your surgery is set up to let you view results online, do that. You'll need to ask reception and they will let you have the link and log in details. In theory all surgeries should be set up to allow this, but that's just a theory!

Although I would agree about getting results viewed online, I would suggest that everyone saves screenshots of their results, or downloads their results, or saves a copy on their gadgets, at the earliest opportunity as well.

There have been a few members who have complained to their surgeries in the UK about, say, having a high TSH and not getting an increase in Levo, and have discovered that the results have vanished from view online. And they might find lots of related information has vanished too.

Thanks for that, humanbean. I keep a spreadsheet of my results, both NHS and private, but I realise that spreadsheets can be a mystery to many people.

I keep spreadsheets too. But I also make sure I get hard copies.

I've never asked to get access to my results online.

Why do GP practices not listen to their patients?

I know exactly where you are coming from; as I've been unwell for the past 6 weeks, and trying to get the RIGHT blood tests for my thyroid, was like trying to get gold liquid out of the ground. In the end I got in touch with my medical insurance company, (as I could not wait any longer, and waste my time for a basic blood test)! I've seen a consultant who has FINALLY listened to me; as I had asked my GP for a full thyroid test, and normally they only offer one, which is the TSH test; whereby, in the past my thyroid results have come back NORMAL! I've suspected for the past 9 years I've had problems with my thyroid, I thought I had a slugglish thyroid, (which now isn't the case, as I've told I've got an overactive thyroid)!! and yesterday, after waiting a long time, I finally got full blood tests done, it's turned out I've got an overactive thyroid, in the thorough, thyroid blood test I had for TSH, T3 and T4! I couldn't believe it; as my symptoms have been: tiredness, whereby I would fall asleep for three hours in the afternoon, and I couldn't stay awake all day long. Secondly, sweating profusely on my forehead, face and neck; as if I had run a marathon; after doing the ironing, hoovering, cooking etc. Recently, breathlessness, too, and heart palpitations! My consultant is referring me to an endochrinologist who specialises in thyroid problems. Due to being unwell for the past 6 weeks, my type 2 diabetes sugar levels have gone up, as in my blood tests it showed I have the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)! Good luck, FinneUK, I would see if you can go for a second opinion.

Thank you, FinneUK, and again, I'm so sorry you are having a frustrating time with your GP's. I've been trying to do research on the internet, to find out why GP's don't offer full blood tests for thyroid problems; as it appears they only off the basic ones, from my experience in the past! I can only suggest, you ask your GP to refer you to a specialist who deals with thyroid problems or an endochrinologist who would give you the full blood test, for your thyroid problems.
