Well yesterday I was stuck in A&E with awful kidney pain, over 7 hours later got home to a note on my floor "we tried to deliver your prescription today (liquid levothyroxin) but no one was in, it as been sent back to the pharmacy ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธI'm going to ring now to see if they can deliver it again as I'm still to ill to go out๐Ÿ˜ข

Changing the subject my son suffered a umbilical hernia a few weeks ago, he had a full blood count done and his TSH as come back as 5.3..ranges..0.27...4.2).....here we go with gps who know very little to nothing about thyroid conditions ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ.. Firstly his gp told him it wasn't that bad, ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธalthough he as been telling me his health as taken a turn these last 6 months.. Feeling very tired, lethargic, cold, his job is demanding and he travels a lot, I did tell him to get a full blood work up, but he was way to busy๐Ÿ˜ž.. Anyway the hernia took pay to that, he is resting now and seeing a specialist tomorrow.

With my knowledge of thyroid conditions now, thanks to this site ๐Ÿ™Œ I have told him he will need further bloods in around 6/7 weeks to see if his TSH remains over range , also further tests if it goes back into normal range to see if it remains there๐Ÿ’ช.. I feel a bit empowered I can give him such advice as he was just going to let his gp say a ths of 5.3 is not that bad, Gezzz no wonder we don't get diagnosed with an attitude like this gp as... ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ I'm now his doc.. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I've sent him the ref ranges for T3, T4 TSH.. He put back ๐Ÿ˜•what are they... Don't worry son I'll explain it all to you ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Underline to him that he MUST also get vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 and thyroid antibodies

Perhaps persuade him to use Medichecks or Blue horizon?

Remind him to book blood test for 9am or earlier if possible

yeah I outlined those things to slowdragon but I think he was overwhelmed with the T3, T4, TSH๐Ÿ˜‚.. I'm making up a file for him.. And I agree I think medichecks for his blood would be better, I feel like many on here he will be dismissed especially if his next bloods come bk normal and I'm sure he never mentioned the antibody test so I will be going to his appointments if I can. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I empathise birkie .

I suggested both my grown up sons have basic thyroid tests as a baseline, given my thyroid history.

They agreed, and the younger's labs strongly suggest hypo so I've now pointed him to an FTT which he is reluctantly going to do. He is overweight, constantly tired and lethargic.....not his former self!

Unfortunately his wife thinks it's all unnecessary, which ( didn't) surprise me......I think they are both in denial!!

He too has a demanding job, blames his weight gain on his questionable diet and lack of exercise and his tiredness on his work load.....and maintains " lots of tests" were done when he was in hospital last year to have kidney stones removed. Another clue....so none of this convinces me!

I've already given him my analysis of his rather odd labs and I'm sure his thyroid is struggling badly.....but we need more detail.

Hopefully the upcoming labs will take this forward.....unfortunately he lives at the other end of the country so we have to communicate by Skype, phone etc a good deal of the time.

So, I'm now concerned about his having to communicate any issues that the test confirms, with a GP who is (probably) clueless.

I (we) absolutely will not be focussed on medic's obsession with TSH since FT3 is the most important result.....and misunderstood by many medics..

Has your son has a full thyroid test to include....

TSH, FT4, FT3, vit B12, vit D, folate, ferritin and antibodies TPO and Tg

Hope you have received your medication now and that things go well for your son.

Mothers never stop worrying about their children, however old they are!!

Good luck .

hi DippyDame๐Ÿ’–

First.. only test was TSH as these bloods were done because he had a umbilical hernia, no T3 or T4.. I've outlined as best as I can that all 3 aong with antibodies need testing.. Its all gone over his head๐Ÿ™„.. He was as thin as a stick, but when I saw him recently I could see he'd gained some weight, he is an avid mountain climber and photograph, he works in film and TV editing.. And like Yr son lives away from me๐Ÿ˜”.. And unfortunately takes doctors at their word... I told him as nothing I've been through with my thyroid taught you anything about Doctors๐Ÿ˜‚ so hopefully with me and this site behind him he may just be fortunate enough to get diagnosed ๐Ÿ’ช

Must be something to do with sons birkie....my two can take some convincing!! I sometimes think they forget I used to have a responsible professional career before I chose to become their full time Mum....and must have left my brain on the doorstep!!!

He also takes doctors at their word....despite the mess they made of his kidney stone experience! Or, my long thyroid saga.

He was looking exhausted when we saw him on Sunday, on Skype, so I'm treading cautiously until he does the TTF....then more persuasion will be required methinks. He has gained so much weight it's very concerning.... and like your son he used to be slim.

Quiet persistence, and a fair wind, will hopefully get us there.....

Good luck.

yeah ๐Ÿ˜me thinks maybe daughters are more able to understand, I did with my own mother, but my brothers were either to busy or just didn't want to know.

But I hope our sons can get better treatment than we did.. โค๏ธ

Hi

His 33..but my fear is he will be treated the same way I was, over 12 months to diagnose me with graves, my surgery didn't do thyroid bloods after I got a diagnosis off an endo in 2014 of subclinical hyperthyroidism, finally got diagnosed in 2018..i will not let that happen to him.. I eventually lost my thyroid in 2019 ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜
