Strange results - help please.

My husband continues to have all the classic hypo symptoms despite being on 125mcg Levo.

He has had no response whatsoever to the medication, but his T4 is now 26.2, T3 5.3 and TSH 0.01. If he was overmedicated wouldn't he experience hyper symptoms?

Predictably, his GP has lowered his dose, but this leaves him going nowhere.

Any thoughts please?

I can't remember if he has tried T3?

Levo is so obviously not working for him, has he got worse in hypo symptoms lately? if yes then it is all going into reverse T3.

or has he had no relief at all since starting and not getting better or worse?

Absolutely no change - neither better no worse - that what puzzles me.

in that case he might improve with an increase, if GP is not willing to increase he can ask to trial NDT or some T3.

Could you please supply the range for each item to help assessment?

The T3 being above its range indicates a hyper condition but we really need the ranges to help.

Sorry, forgot the ranges

T4 (12-22)

T3 (3.1-6.8)

TSH (0.3-4.2)

Seems not hyper as the T3 is within its range, plus of course no hyper symptoms, so GP wrong to reduce his dose, was probably only taking the TSH into account. Endo referral might be needed here as looks like GP is floundering and taking no intelligent action about the high T4, such as Clarebear advocates.

I also am on T3/T4 combo, synthetic, after being awash in T4 but feeling very ill with hypo symptoms Beyond my GP, who said as much, referred to endo who balanced things out with additional T3. Hope this works for your husband.

Thanks for the advice - he's been referred to an endo, so now just awaiting an appointment. He's read everybody's comments, and will go well-prepared.

The main site:

thyroiduk.org

is a mine of valuable information. including about other medications such as Armour and how to get it.

Thanks - yes, I've got him reading it.

The range in my lab for fT3 is 3.1 - 6.8, so if it's the same, then I would also think he needs some T3. I had similar results on thyroxine to your husband, but as NBD above mentions, had actually started to feel worse, due I think to high reverse T3. I am so much better now on a combo of T3 and T4 (in my case Armour).

Please could you post the reference ranges for fT3 and fT4? Thanks. xx

Thanks Clarebear - see replies to NBD and No Stone Unturned.

Thanks Zabby - useful reminders. We know all the vits and mins are fine, so it's time to look elsewhere.
