Welcome to the forum

Are you diagnosed as hypothyroid and on replacement thyroid hormones

If yes, what and how much

Was test done early morning, ideally before 9am

(and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test if on levothyroxine)

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested

Ferritin is low, but not quite deficient

Probably low enough to be causing issues

You need full iron panel test for anaemia

Are you vegetarian or vegan

Were folate, B12 and vitamin D tested?

I've not been diagnosed with thyroid problem or had antibodies test. I'm not vegetarian my b12 is 788 and folate is 15 . I'm on vit d and last reading 92 due for another test. I had test at 10.30 what do I look for for full iron test?

Tsh 0.87 (0.35-4.94)

T4 11.8 (7.5-21.1)

Ferritin 39 (23-300)

The above will be classed as normal because they are within range; however, we can't interpret the thyroid results without knowing if you have a diagnosed thyroid condition and are on any medication.

Your ferritin result is within range but is very low and will likely be causing symptoms.

Symptoms of low ferritin include:

◾Weakness

◾Fatigue

◾Difficulty concentrating

◾Poor work productivity

◾Cold hands and feet

◾Poor short-term memory

◾Difficulty remembering names

◾Dizziness

◾Pounding in the ears

◾Shortness of breath

◾Brittle nails

◾Headaches

◾Restless legs

As a ferritin level below 30 confirms iron deficiency according to NICE:

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...

In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency.

you should ask your GP to run a complete iron panel to include Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity, Transferrin Saturation Percentage plus Ferritin, this will show if you have iron deficiency. Also a full blood count to see if you have anaemia.

Cortisol 328

104-349 adrenal failure can't be excluded a short synacthen test req

This comment on your results form is telling you this is not normal. Hopefully a short synacthen test has been arranged.

I haven't been diagnosed with a thyroid condition and Gp said results satisfactory. Even when he knows I'm really breathless all the time and sent me for a cardiologist test got monitor for the weekend. My hair has gone really thin on top to and coming out.

Breathlessness is frequently linked to low iron/ferritin

Extremely difficult to maintain good iron levels on plant based diet

Are you pre or post menopause

Low iron and/or low ferritin frequently linked to hair loss

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...

In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods, obviously highest are red, meat and offal…….but some plants have small amounts of iron in eg pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Thankyou I'm menopausal and do eat meat. I think I've had full blood panel test but it won't let me show it on here

You can add an image in a reply by clicking on the rectangle with mountains in - last icon in row beneath the message box. Make sure no personal details are showing, eg name, date of birth, doctor's name, etc.

Breathlessness and hair loss in list of low ferritin symptoms. You should push for iron panel or do one privately with Medichecks.

Do you have Results and ranges for

Iron

TIBC

Transferrin saturation

Ferritin

France92 profile image
France92 in reply toSlowDragon

Ferritin 39 rbc 4.93 (3.80-4.80) hb 148(120-150) haven't got the others you suggested

SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toFrance92

The ones that SlowDragon has listed are the iron panel.

Your ferritin is low, you haven't put the range but the lowest range is 13-150 so whatever the range it is low. Below 30ug/L is iron deficiency according to NICE but you'd need the iron panel to confirm that.

Your haemoglobin is in range, haemoglobin would be low to show anaemia.

France92 profile image
France92 in reply toSeasideSusie

Ferritin range is 23-300 so if my haemoglobin is normal does it mean I'm not anaemic even if ferritin is low?

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toFrance92

Yes.

Ferritin less than 30 confirms iron deficiency according to NICE but you need an iron panel to confirm it. You can have iron deficiency with or without anaemia so low ferritin doesn't automatically mean anaemia.
