I’m considering trying a multi mineral supplement, any advice on which type to try, and should I avoid ones containing zinc and iodine. Thanks

Avoid iron, iodine, calcium. Zinc and copper are questionable as we hypos tend to have one high and the other low.

Thank you, it was as I suspected. The particular multi mineral I was interested in contained all the above mentioned. My local health food shop recommended I purchase each mineral required, separately. I’d need to work out the costing before buying.

Well I'm tempted to be cynical and say your health shop has a vested interest as buying nutrients separately is much more expensive than getting a multi vitamin. Many multis are just expensive wee to be honest. They use the cheapest versions of the vitamins or minerals. And either too much or too little to be effective. And many will cancel each other out like vitamin C lowers the bioavailability of B12.

Do you have any reason to think your vitamin levels are deficient? Normally the forum advises testing before taking the plunge as you could be wasting your money at best and at worst causing yourself harm.

Hi Sparklingsunshine, I’m inclined to agree with you as regards the local health food shop. I’m due an MOT next month at the surgery, will ask them to check my levels, if not will check out the tests on this site. Then decide the way forward. Just felt like a bit of a boost, as I’ve been feeling pretty flat lately.

HiIt's totally understandable, I think we've all done if when we're feeling low or not quite right to look for reasons why and thinking we're deficient is something is perfectly reasonable. Sometimes though having too much iron for example can be as harmful as not enough. Ditto vitamin D. That's why it's good to test first 😄.

My folate was very low last year which wasn't what I was expecting, as I was convinced my ferritin would be low. Actually my ferritin was pretty good but I just assumed my iron would be pants because its been like that in the past. Just as well I didn't start swallowing iron tablets.

Spot on with your reply, I’m terrible for self medicating with vitamins etc, if I feel under the weather. Hoping the forthcoming tests will reveal any deficiency I might have.
