Vertigo is listed as a possible symptom of hypothyroidism, but as there are so many symptoms we don't all get all the symptoms. I've certainly never suffered from vertigo in 47 years of hypothyroidism (although I have had one episode of BPPV - Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo - which is caused by crystals in the ear canal and not connected).

Hi, if you taking Armour thyroid, it causes vertigo

It didn't with me when I took Armour, so it's one of those things that some people may experience but it's by no means applicable to everyone so it's not possible to say that Armour causes vertigo.

This is an excerpt from the following link:-

" A vestibular subtype of Ménière Disease has been described in the setting of hypothyroidism. Episodes are typically mild, brief, and lack sensorineural hearing loss. Additional symptoms frequently reported include nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, and fatigue. As demonstrated in this case, hypothyroidism may be associated with a mixed presentation of peripheral and central vertigo.

Results suggest you are under medicated thyroid wise

Have you had B12, folate, ferritin and Vitamin D tested yet

Low B vitamins can cause dizziness

Suggest you get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done privately via Medichecks or Blue horizon

Always test thyroid levels early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

On levothyroxine TSH should always be below 2

Most important results are always Ft3 followed by Ft4

Important all four vitamins are at GOOD levels

Low vitamin levels extremely common with hypothyroidism and also as we get older

Exactly what vitamin supplements are you currently taking

My doctor said that they only check TSH now and I haven’t been told to take any vitamins

I am not taking any vitamins. I had my review about being on 75mg of levithyroxine and my TSH was 2.9 they said that I do not need an extra dose as it’s fine I have been on that for 12 weeks I weight 10stone 5 lbs I have started having cramps in my buttocks again

My experiences always come down to not being correctly medicated for optimal thyroid. All sorts of symptoms appear when not optimal. It’d be interesting to see your thyroid blood results. Your TSH needs to be around 1.00. And your T4 and T3 need to be at least mid way in the range without ingestion of your meds prior to the blood draw and an early morning draw. Have a look at your latest bloods. Do you have Patient Access on line this is a quick and easy way to check. If not get a print out from your GP surgery. We are all entitled to this.

Did your blood pressure come down?

Yes it came down 24 hours later but I was in casually with the blood pressure and the dizziness and had to have an MRI scan in my head as they thought it was a stroke thankfully it wasn’t

Hi. I had horrendous vertigo on and off for a few months. I literally couldn't turn my head in bed without throwing up! It never occurred to me that it was thyroid related until I got my blood test results done privately. Since increasing my medication I luckily haven't had a problem since.

Not saying you had this, and if it cleared up with a dose increase it would seem not , but just adding this for general information

But extreme dizzynes to that level sounds like :

Labyrinthitis or Vestibular neuritis,... both cause severe dizzyness with vomiting.

nhs.uk/conditions/labyrinth...

My OH had this and i found him literally clinging to the kitchen floor.... and even lifting his head up made him vomit. The ambulance man organised him some tablets (i forget what ) to help with the dizzyness .. it cleared it up by itself over a few weeks. But he wasn't safe to go for a walk during this time.

Labyrinthitis can be extremely severe.

Can I ask? Does your vertigo get so bad you can't walk and stand? Like someone is pushing you down and then if someone picks you up you can't control your body movements and pretty much upchuck?

I have hypothyroidism and for some reason my levothyroxine controls my vertigo 100% but I'm in the hospital without it. I read that vertigo is a common symptom of hypothyroidism (please don't quote me).

My endocrinologist said she didn't see the connection. This is my first post here but I think this would help shmabstracts.org/abstract/p...

There's a lot of medical jargon but this jumped out at me "A vestibular subtype of Ménière Disease has been described in the setting of hypothyroidism. Episodes are typically mild, brief, and lack sensorineural hearing loss. Additional symptoms frequently reported include nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, and fatigue. As demonstrated in this case, hypothyroidism may be associated with a mixed presentation of peripheral and central vertigo...." Look up central vertigo and maybe talk to a neurologist if you're concerned with that.

Only my opinion.

When I ended up in Casualty with dizziness and really high blood pressure, I had an MRI scan in the brain but the results came back that I was ok. They have diagnosed me with vertigo and I am no tablets for a few weeks. I didn’t have very good balance for two days. I have read that it’s under medicated i have asked my doctor to increase the dose but they said that my TSH was 2.9 which is fine, but apparently when you are on levothyroxine it should bu lower.
