Hi there Happy New Year Everyone .

I am on 100mg levothyroxine, 20mg liothyronine . Fultium D3 800 IU

Please could someone offer me advice . I took the flu eight weeks ago followed by sinus infection laryngitis plus vertigo . Thankfully the laryngitis is now better . I have been given ear drops Betnesol prochloperazine and galpseud . I have constant migraines . My nose ears throat are all stuffed with fluid so dizzy .

My doc is not concerned that I have had three ear drops in last two months or vertigo . Please could anyone advise me as to what to take ? I thought of getting Milk Thistle or vitamin C , I would do anything to shift this vertigo and muffled hearing !

I am terrified to try nasal spray as one of them swelled up my vocal cords causing laryngitis for a month .

Thanks so much , I appreciate all your advice and support I would be lost without this forum .

Vit C is always good to take - if it suits you - it doesn't suit everyone. But, not so sure about milk thistle. Do you suspect a liver problem? Have you had your B12 and folate tested?

Hi Greygoose thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate it . I was checking the internet and I know milk thistle is good for liver and detoxing .

I don’t think I have a liver problem I have no idea , I would try anything to get rid of this vertigo and migraines . I feel like there is fluid in my nose throat and ears .

I am getting my b12 and folate rested next week as I did get it tested , but I had taken two tonics with biotin in it so think that messed up my result .

I have not been well since I took the flu end of October my doc is not concerned says it’s a virus and I saw my consultant two months ago who’s happy enough with my thyroid levels .

Many thanks

Could very well be the virus. It does take a long time to get over it.

Your consultant may very well be happy with your thyroid levels, but that doesn't actually mean they're good. Have you got a copy of the results?

I maybe should get vitamin c tablets it might help . I was taking zell immunoplex tonic though hasn’t worked yet.

These are my results:

Ferritin 180 Range 13-150

B12. 647. Range 197- 777

Folate. 9.6 Range. 3.9-26.8

T4 18.2. Range 12-22

TSH 0.02 range 0.27-4.2

T3 6.1. Range 3.1-6.8

Thank you

Well, they do seem good. Although I think I would want my folate higher. But I don't think low folate causes migraines. Have you had your sex hormones tested? Migraines can be linked to those being too high or too low.

But, again, it could just be down to the virus and not being completely recovered.

Yes I think I had those checked two months ago and they were fine . Gosh a virus lasts a long time . I think my folate should be higher also though the doc won’t give me them as it’s mid range .

Thank you .

No, he'd only give you folic acid, anyway. What you want is methylfolate. You can buy that on amazon.

Yes, I'm afraid that when you're hypo, it does take a long time to get over infections, and things. Much longer than euthyroid people.

Yes it was folic acid I was given . Will getting vitamin C help ?Sorry for asking so many questions I just want to get better .

My gp didn’t even know that biotin had an effect on vitamin levels though I told him my consultant told me and he has agreed to get blood tests done again just incase .

Thank you .

I'm sorry, I don't know if vit C will help. You can but try.

I'm not surprised your GP didn't know about biotin, it's not widely known. But, it's not that it has an effect on vitamin levels exactly, it's just that some blood tests use biotin in the process, so if you are taking biotin, it can skew a level - giving either a false high or a false low - but it can be any blood test result, not just vitamins.

Thank you greygoose for all your advice I really appreciate it . No the doc hasn’t a clue what I was talking about only accepted it because I said my consultant told me .

I hope you are keeping well yourself .

Thank you .

Biotin can affect many blood tests

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

Hi SlowDragon , thank you so much for your reply .

I did get vitamin D tested a while ago it was good and doc prescribed fultium vitamin D3 .

I don’t take b complex but I take b12 , thiamine and b6 I think .

I saw my doctor on Monday and have stopped all vitamins until next week including b12 .

If I could get rid of this vertigo and migraines it would be great as I do not want to take another oral antibiotic .

Thank you so much .

If you had good vitamin D GP wouldn't have prescribed vitamin D

Presumably you mean vitamin D was low

How low?

Has it been retested since

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results

GP will only prescribe to bring vitamin D up to 50nmol.

Aiming to improve by self supplementing to at least 80nmol and around 100nmol may be better .

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Retest twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is good as avoids poor gut function.

It's trial and error what dose each person needs. Frequently with Hashimoto's / hypothyroidism we need higher dose than average

Hi SlowDragon I think it was near 70 though I can’t remember though doc said it was good . I will try the spray see if it helps . I am getting bloods tested next week .

I bought vitamin c tonight and took 2000mg hopefully that will help the dizziness as I have been off sick since 25th October and due back teaching next Friday .

Thanks so much I appreciate all your kind advice .

Just a quick bit of personal experience here.

I was suffering greatly last winter with vertigo and silent migraines, the new doc was keen to prescribe pretty hard hitting drugs which as always I reacted badly to.

So, I searched online and came across an article where someone had asked some medical professionals what they would take for this if it was them and as one they all (ok it might not have exactly been a scientific study!) said Magnesium. So I pootled out and bought a spray (skin spray) and within a short while the vertigo and silent migraines went away 🙂

I didn’t have the fluid build up you describe though so am not sure how relevant this is - but I do think the problem was exacerbated after a virus and then flu.

Magnesium flakes in the bath are good option

Angie56 profile image
Angie56 in reply toSlowDragon

Would those be better than Epsom salts as I tried Epsom salts they make me feel terrible very weak . I must look into getting those as I can’t take magnesium tablets .

Thank you Slow Dragon I took 2000mg

Of vitamin c last night hoping over the weekend the vertigo shifts .

With the spray you can start off very small and build up to whatever your body is ok with. I started with just two squirts at first and it was fine.

It’s also great for helping you sleep if used at night and for stopping cramps if you get them. I actually spray it on my feet at night so it does the vertigo, the cramps and insomnia all in one😀!

I got a travel size on offer in H&B and it only cost £2.99 which was a great way to try it.

That’s amazing Sandi it got rid of the vertigo . I have ordered magnesium flakes hopefully they are the same thing .

I hope you continue to keep as well as u can . 😊
