Iodine Contrast Medium for UAE with Graves

Lazybones_freebird profile image

Hi Community!

Just wondering if anyone with Graves has has had a procedure using radio-iodine contrast medium, not directed at the thyroid, and if there was any ill effects.I have been trying to treat heavy menstrual bleeding for almost a year now. My dr recommended UAE (uterine artery embolisation) after failed myomectomy but I am scared it will induce thyrotoxicosis or mess up my controlled graves due to contrast medium.

My latest RBC 3.04 M/uL (3.7-5.1), Hgb 8.4 g/dL (11.3-15.5), Hct% 25.1 (35.0-46.0), Iron 15ug/dL (30-160), Ferritin 7.4 (12.0-306.0). I had climbed my iron levels back to normal in august 2021 but the last 2 months of severe bleeding has left me worse than ever. I am looking for anyone with info on UAE or any iodine contrast medium procedures and hyperthyroidism/ graves disease. I am trying to decide on UAE vs hysterectomy and if it wasnt for my Graves I would be choosing UAE but I am hesitant due to graves and dont want to waste time going in the wrong direction. On 10mg methimazole/day latest thyroid results taken same day as iron levels above

TSH 3.28uIU/ml (0.4-4.0),

Ft4 0.7 ng/dL (0.5-1.6),

Ft3 3.9 pg/mL (2.5-3.9)

Lazybones_freebird I'm afraid I cannot help much, but about 5 years ago I did suffer badly with projectile vomitting about 5 times after I had an MRI using a Contrast. I have Graves and now understand that we should not have Contrast in X-rays. Please see my profile for further information about my condition.

Thank you nightingale-56. Your story is very helpful and thank you for sharing. I honestly think they will disregard my condition and tell me it will be fine, but I will be the one to live with the consequences. I have Graves and the last dr I saw wrote hypothyroid in my after patient summary. Oh my…Mistakes are so easy:( I am sorry to hear about everything you went through and while having your children. That must have been beyond challenging and nerve-racking. Best of luck and health to you going forward.

Yes, Lazybones_freebird , if the correct initial diagnosis is not adhered to then mistakes can be easily made. I still have Graves, but am now Hypothyroid after a sub-total Thyroidectomy. So many Doctors/Endocrinologists just take current blood levels into consideration when treating, ignoring all that went initially. I wish you all the best going forwRD.
