I am trying to find a non prescription NDT without nasty fillers and additives. I came across Nature Thyroid but I can't tell if you need a prescription or not. I'm be grateful if anyone in the know could let me know... Thanks!

MapleMoose, Nature-Throid is not currently available anywhere, with or without prescription. It was withdrawn from the market around August 2020 and as yet is still not in production again in any strength. getrealthyroid.com/nature-t...

Thank you, that's a shame.

Nature Thyroid was withdrawn from sale quite a long time ago as batches were found to be sub-potent.

Thanks for letting me know, appreciate it.

Sorry, I realise my reply may have seemed abrupt but going down with something as have got a sore throat and a cold coming - just hope it isn't covid!

in reply to Delgor

No worries, didn't seem to be. Just seen a post about new concerns re Thyroid S and it's ingredients and not working properly. Getting pretty worried, just ordered another batch and no feasible alternative options at the moment. Hope you'll be feeling better soon. I've had Covid & it started with a cold, tender throat and fatigue, so maybe, if it is, hope your symptoms don't get severe. Best of luck!!

Hi - I had been on Naturethroid since 2008 and once I had the correct dosage for me I felt great. Sadly as you see NT was withdrawn and so I'm now on Erfa - early days as yet as I am introducing Erfa whilst still taking NT as I had some left. Seems ok but I am taking half grain erfa in afternoon and 1 grain NatureThroid in the mornings - I will know more when on Erfa full time but if you look on the levels Erfa has slightly less "active ingredients"than NatureThroid. If and when NT come back on the market I would recommend it as it worked so well for me for so many years. I also went for NT as it had so few additives. Thyroxine put me in hospital twice with suspected heart attacks - unfounded I'm pleased to say. Erfa still needs a prescription.

Thanks! I have asked my GP whether he can prescribe Erfa. He said he can't without the go ahead from the Endo department but will enquire for me. He told me not to be too hopeful as the NHS is not for NDT in general. So I will have to wait and see. I thought you can buy it online without a prescription. I hope so if I can't get it via the NHS

I just noticed others comments. I'm on NP thyroid which is the same as Nature Thyroid. I've had great results with it and I just refilled my prescription so yes you can still get it.

Tinkermt, I'm on NP thyroid which is the same as Nature Thyroid

No, they are not the same. They may both come under the broad heading of NDT (Natural Desiccated Thyroid), but they are not the same product. Made by different manufacturers, and likely to have different excipients.

I've had great results with it and I just refilled my prescription so yes you can still get it.

Good that you're doing well on the NP Thyroid brand, but that doesn't mean anyone else can assume the same will be true for themselves. We're all different and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.

in reply to Tinkermt

Thanks. Does NP Thyroid need a prescription or can you buy it online? Also, does it have lots of fillers and binders?

NP and Naturethroid are both prescription. I have taken various brands of NDT for past 20+ years and am on Armour now after I was on NP when it was being recalled and got very sick from it. I've tried thyroid glandular natural supplements too and those did not help at all since they have the T4 removed. There is reportedly a product that is like prescription that is sold out of Thailand I think but have not tried it since it was sold out when I was looking into it. I think it was granules so the dosage could be easily adjusted. Are you not able to find a doctor who will prescribe medication?

in reply to PavlovaDog

Thanks! I am taking Thyroid S from Thailand and it has worked well apart from hair thinning which may be caused by other factors as well... Like the menopause. I am getting an itching skin reaction from something and wasn't sure if the Thyroid S had been changed since my last batch. There has been some concerns on other posts about possible changes to it and it not working as well. I wanted to try and source a non prescription alternative NDT without fillers and binders. I cannot get any medic near me to prescribe T3 with T4 and certainly not NDT. They think it's voodoo tribal medicine from the medicine man 🙄😔. Levothyroxine is their only go to treatment 🙄😡.

Itching is not always easy to pinpoint the cause. Could be winter dry skin. Do you hae humidity gauge at home or work to see if the furnace is drying out the air too much? I'm having to run the steam vaporizer a lot to prevent dry peeling skin right now. Itch could also be allergies, even to laundry detergent, soap or shampoo. Extreme itching can be from liver problems. Can also get severe itching from stopping taking allergy medicine if you had been taking it daily for awhile. Zyrtec is notorious for causing withdrawal itching. Is your Thyroid S dose correct? Have you had blood tests since you started taking it?

in reply to PavlovaDog

It's just started happening and feels like an autoimmune response to an allergic reaction to something. It's certainly draining and I hope it's not my new batch of thyroid meds.

Yes, I did great on NT for years. I switched to NP when NT was unavailable. I felt bad on NP and switched to Armour. But I’ve had to increase my dose from 165mg of NT to 240mg of Armour.

in reply to Chett

Thanks! It's a tricky business this self medication malarkey. It's hard to know what to do and what to try, especially as it takes time to know if something works and so costly.

You’re right. I give myself two weeks on a new dose to see if it has any effect. My meds aren’t too expensive, my husband is retired military, so we get a good rate.
