Blood test results

I suspected that my ferritin was low again, but the lab and doctors say it is normal. If you remember, I had an iron infusion a year ago resulting in my level being very high, above range.

Please may I have an interpretation of that and other tests.

Ferritin level lower than 30ug/L confirms iron deficiency according to NICE. However, for iron infusions it seems it has to be much, much lower than that. Whether your GP will consider iron tablets is debatable as you've been told it's "normal". It's only classed as normal because it's within the reference range but it's very, very low when you consider the range is 10-300. You will have to discuss with your GP, ask for past problem to be taken into account and ask what he proposes.

Please may I have an interpretation of that and other tests.

There are no other tests showing, only the ferritin test.

You need Folate, B12 and vitamin D tested

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Ferritin is obviously far too low again,

Are you vegetarian or vegan?

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

I’m not a vegetarian and eat a varied healthy diet. I don’t like liver, but can tolerate homemade chicken liver pate. However, I suspect that I have an absorption problem.
