Over the past 6 months I have been losing more hair than usual, most noticeably when washing it as it blocks the bath plug hole! I’m getting worried as my hair is now thinning so much, and I’ve just bought a supplement called Florisene as it had good reviews. This contains Biotin and Iron, amongst other things.
Looking at my most recent Medichecks blood test, my Ferritin was 136 (13-150) and Folate Serum 13.3 (2.9-14.5). Now I’m not sure if the Florisene is suitable.
Latest thyroid tests in July were:
TSH 0.01 (0.27-4.2)
FT3 5.2 (3.1-6.8)
FT4 20.5 (12-22)
I would appreciate if anyone could advise on the hair loss as it used to be thick, and has lost so much volume now, in quite a short space of time. I am 64, so maybe it’s just my age? Or stress, which I have suffered with lately? I’m getting really anxious about it now.

Stress can play a part, I remember my late mother's hair was affected quite badly when she lost her partner, she found the hair loss quite distressing.
Here is an article about vitamin deficiencies than can lead to hair loss:
Your ferritin level doesn't suggest that you need iron, but what was the CRP result from the same test, if CRP was raised that would probably be due to inflammation and ferritin can also be raised for the same reason. If your CRP was low then your ferritin level could well be your normal level at that time.
Your thyroid results look good.
To be honest, I'm not sure that the Florisene supplement looks any good. For a start it contains iron and iron should be taken 2 hours away from other supplements otherwise their absorption can be affected. It contains only 50mcg biotin and that is quite a low dose, my B Complex contains 400mcg. The selenium and B12 it contains are the wrong, least absorbable forms, and that's even if they are absorbed.
These two articles mention a much higher dose of biotin is needed for hair regrowth:
Thanks you for reply SeasideSusie My CRP HS is 1.4 (0-5). And you have reminded me to get some more B Complex - I have been a bit lax with my Vitamin regime, and need to step it up. I am taking Vit D3 (5000iu) and MK7, Vit C, cod liver oil capsules and Magnesium Glycinate. I will have a read up on Biotin. Thank you again.
Hi do you have Hashis, if you have an autoimmune disorder it puts you at more risk of others and alopecia is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the hair follicles. Women can suffer from female pattern baldness which is similar to men, but not as severe. Can be genetic or hormonal, too much testosterone.
As we age our hair often gets whispier and thinner. Stress as Susie said can be a big factor in hair loss, which becomes a vicious cycle because you get stressed about the hairloss which then increases your overall stress levels.
It might be worth checking any meds you take, a very high number of drugs can cause increased hairloss as a possible side effect. If its listed as a side effect maybe ask your GP for a alterative. And of course hypothyroid can lead to hair loss especially if it's not well controlled.
Minoxidil 5% foam or lotion can be very effective at slowing down hairloss and regrowing hair. You can buy it online or otc in pharmacies. It takes time and regular continued use is required but it is one of the only clinically approved hair loss remedies.
Hi Sparklingsunshine , I don’t have Hashimoto’s, thankfully, and my UAT seems well controlled at the moment. The only meds I take are Erfa Thyroid NDT, which I have been on for quite a few years now. Maybe my stress levels will subside when this blooming Pandemic doesn’t seem so threatening, I can but hope! Thank you for the info on Minoxidil, I will look into that.
