I have been feeling pretty rubbish the last few months and have recently been put onto HRT (suspecting peri-menopause) but haven't felt any better so thought it was worth getting my bloods done to check if there was anything that might explain my symptoms. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2014 and have been GF since then, don't have much dairy and am usually quite active - but last 6 months have really struggled to do anything other than walk. Is there anything that jumps out with my results? I have put my previous bloods (when I felt ok) below to give a comparison.
Thanks in advance....π€―

* Nothing to eat or drink except water before the test
* Last dose of Levo 24 hours before the test
* No biotin or B Complex supplement for 3-7 days before the test
Ferritin is a little low at 51 (13-150), it's recommended to be half way through range with some experts saying that the optimal level for thyroid function is 90-110ug/L.
You can help raise your level by eating liver regularly, maximum 200g per week due to it's high Vit A content, also liver pate, black pudding, and including lots of iron rich foods in your diet
Don't consider taking an iron supplement unless you do an iron panel, if you already have a decent level of serum iron and a good saturation percentage then taking iron tablets can push your iron level even higher, too much iron is as bad as too little.
Folate range is actually 2.9-14.5 and it's recommended that folate be at least half way through range. Yours is 47% through range.
Active B12 is very good.
Vit D is slightly low at 80nmol/L. The Vit D Society and Grassroots Health recommend a level of 100-150nmol/L, with a recent blog post on Grassroots Health mentioning a study which recommends over 125nmol/L. You might want to consider improving that especially now it's winter and we can't make Vit D naturally from the sun. I expect 2,000iu D3 daily might be enough, along with D3's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit D2-MK7.
Thyroid Function shows conversion of T4 to T3 isn't particularly good, FT4 is high in range and FT3 is on the low side. However, if you took your Levo before the test this would show a false high FT4 so I'd need to know if you did the test as we always advise. Also good conversion needs optimal nutrient levels and your low ferritin probably wont be helping.
Thanks for your reply. I am taking 100mg Levo, didn't take before bloods were taken (24hrs gap). Took bloods at 8am, fasted. Don't take B supplements but do take;2000mg Vit C, 400mcg Selenium, 100mg Ubiquinol, 22mg Zinc picolonate, 400mg Magnesium, 6000IU (+K2) daily.
I do eat a varied diet but include a good mix of iron rich foods such as chickpeas (I love homemdade hummus), spinach, kale, broccoli, steak, quinoa, mixed beans, salmon, tuna, lentils etc so would have hoped my iron levels would be ok?
I was confused by my antibody levels versus my last test - any ideas/ suggestions why my thyroid peroxidase antibodies would have increased so much? π€¨
Thanks again - it always seems like 1 step forward and then 2 back π€―.
Antibodies fluctuate so it's not unusual to see a different result when retested. But antibodies are not the problem, with Hashimoto's it's the immune system that attacks and gradually destroys the thyroid.
Have you tested selenium? It's usual to take up to 200mcg which is considered a safe amount unless tested and found to be low.
Also zinc, have you tested that? Zinc and copper should be balanced. We Hypos tend to have one high and the other low so it's best to test to ensure you're not adding to an already high level.
No, haven't had Selenium or Zinc and Copper tested - well, think I did years ago (before diagnosed) in Australia but never had it done back home. I will try and find a test - assume this wouldn't be done via my GP? π I see Medichecks do one - bu only from a London clinic...will search around tomorrow - unless there are any suggestions on here? Thank you π
