Is NDT still prescribed on NHS

Hi. Long time since here so apologies not up to date, just been getting on with it so to speak best i can and aimed to get to one tsh in case it was magic number for me

Im at 1.9 tsh t4 at very top and t3 not done as usual to see i feel dreadful most if time brain fogged out

But my new gp, so helpful, wrote to Endo to try get me trial ndt after finally getting to what is seen as ok numbers via levo. He writes back they are no longer able to prescribe ndt…….( even though he wrote me last year he would look at giving it to me at my next appointment, im unsure of the month)

🤦‍♀️ No words after persevering as i dont feel wellness

Is there anything to know regarding this please? Is it true? everywhere or just some areas? Is it a slowing down and stopping altogether ?

He had prescribed Armour to lucky patients which i really wanted to try

He says my t3 was fine and high at 5 out of 6 when it was done last year???…….on that occasion i was really getting suspicious as i phoned for results a few times over five weeks and they appeared lost, then a wonderful set finally arrived which i felt i couldnt believe but anyway still had awful fatigue even if was good numbers. ( adrenals came back ok)

The only other time i had t3 done the labs said my result was dismissed as fine and wouldnt give the result.!!!! I made issue and told them they didnt know what endo was looking at and i was put down by them saying they were clinic-itions ….(that word sorry) as if they are the experts

I had it done separately after that which seemingly was a good reading but felt i was overstepping my mark in their eyes and lost faith tbh

Endo writes today to say it must be chronic fatigue or post viral….

Id like to know about epsom barr i had glandular fever at 17 i know Dr P was into this, has anyone info please which may help me at least know what wrong with me ive had to switch off to large extent through the exhaustion and fatigue it's hard enough prioritising and living ( have groin pain ongoing the hospital will do hip surgery im so tempted but as energy goes so low, fatigue, weak muscles, i am concerned it may not be the right move as on the few ‘good days’ it doesn't bother me although the lovely Writington surgeon says i have spurs. I guess i may have more energy if discomfort does go🤔 ( what if it doesnt though!?). And muscles still weak,

Il need a new set of bloods i feel now Iv been trying to avoid the cost

Any thoughts appreciated.

🌸

Hi Jeppy, I am sure others will get back to you about this and I may be wrong, but I thought that an Endo can prescribe NDT in the UK. Sounds as though yours might be a thyroid non believer if I can put it like that.

Someone else will be along soon, sorry I am not so sure of myself in suggesting anything going forward.

Did this Endo actually give you a print out of results??? If so, it would be useful for them to be posted on here with the ranges.

Or were just told you were 'normal' or 'fine?

It is your legal right to see your test results. Your GP should have been given them surely? Could she give them to you?

I would go for a full thyroid test, I believe I am right that the cost is from about £29. But as always I can never find what ever I need to find when I need it!

It is difficult to obtain NDT on the NHS.

This is what ThyroidUK say on their website:

thyroiduk.org/if-you-are-hy...

Natural desiccated thyroid was included, along with liothyronine, in the NHS England guidance, “Items which should not routinely be prescribed in primary care: Guidance for CCGs”. It will therefore be very difficult to obtain an NHS prescription for NDT. If your GP is willing to prescribe this for you, it can be prescribed on a “named patient” basis. Many private doctors are willing to prescribe NDT because they have seen their patients improve on this.

The NHS Clinical Commissioners issued this guidance in 2019

england.nhs.uk/wp-content/u...

NHS England and NHS Improvement

Items which should not routinely be prescribed in primary care:

Guidance for CCGs

(They have lumped NDT in with Liothyronine on page 25)

5.13 Liothyronine (including Armour Thyroid and liothyronine

combination products) [2017]

(Read that section)

It's probably a case of

1) finding an NHS endo who is NDT friendly and willing to prescribe it, or

2) finding an NHS or private doctor to give your a private prescription or

3) buying your own NDT without prescription

I think it would be a good idea to get a full thyroid and vitamin panel to include

TSH

FT4

FT3

Thyroid antibodies

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

to give a full picture of current thyroid and vitamin status. If GP can't or wont do all of them (unlikely to do all) we have recommended private labs who do test bundles to cover all these.

Thanking both a lotYes. I got to that in my last line im just flippin at end of tether what a viscous circle and dont want surgery till able to drop weight……

Is there a least expensive thyroid panel anyone i always used medichecks …, on Thursdays

Il ask Gp but suspect he wont do a full panel. He said hed do vits once a year so il try coincide these 2 tests

All takes time. Im unsure i can fight on to get life balance back its been so long

I dont feel this gp will have confidence to prescribe ndt he was honest he not as informed as myself

Fancy calling synthetic natural amyway? When did they stop ndt was it in 80s

I think they must have stopped NDT in the 70s. I was diagnosed in 1975 and put straight onto Levo, didn't get offered NDT even back then.

Cheapest basic thyroid test - TSH, FT4 and FT3 - is Monitor My Health which is an NHS lab and it costs £26.10 with code here:

Far more likely ago get small doses of T3 prescribed alongside levothyroxine, than NDT

Email Thyroid UK for list of recommend thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3 or NDT

...NHS and Private

tukadmin@thyroiduk.org

Before considering booking any consultation, always get full thyroid and vitamin testing done

Blue horizon and Medichecks have lists on clinics patients can use on their websites

See “visit one of our partner clinics” - £30

medichecks.com/products/adv...

Blue horizon

If you do not know of a professional nurse or phlebotomist we can refer you to a BMI Hospital or arrange a *Nurse home visit (charges will apply).
