Links with Hypothyroidism / Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease - Low TSH / T3 treatment. low Vit D / Post Menopause - Anyone reversed NAFLD?

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism some 10 odd years ago. (previously Hyper and treated with Carbimazole)

GP / Thyroxine only treatment left me with a list of health problems where I was referred to an Endo 3 years ago. After I was successfully trialled on T3 /T4 combo treatment I stabilised and felt able to get back to life.

Endo also diagnosed deficient Vit D levels which we have improved and maintain with daily supplement.

(50mg Thyroxine 10 mg Liothyronine in AM and 10mg PM)

I also take 2000IU Vit D3 a day to keep levels around 100. And I take a Vit B complex supplement as B levels were low but not low enough to require injectable.

I started menopause during this time too - started on HRT patches for maybe one year? Until it became impossible to get hold of them, so came off 'cold turkey!'

During this time I gained weight uncontrollably quickly with no change to intake/ exercie or diet.

I have now just been diagnosed with NAFLD (Non alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)

I have read that it seems Hypothyroidism and NAFLD go hand in hand, and can also be linked to low Vit D levels, also to suppressed TSH levels and low estrogen?

I still hold more weight than I'd like.. BMI 33 - a constant battle! But in general eat healthily, rare takeaways, farely drink, eat lots of veg and no 'ready meals' etc.

There are steps I am taking to try and eat better for my liver and to work on weight loss, however I'm curious to know how many of you here, have also had this diagnosis and more so, if anyone has managed to reverse their NAFLD.

It feels a bit of a catch 22 if I have to reduce T3 to bring up TSH levels to protect my liver.. but risk the likelihood of all my Hypo symptoms returning!

My OH had some blood tests which suggested NAFLD but as he was not an alcoholic his GP was not concerned, however he was diagnosed with T2 diabetes. I arranged for private tests and his TSH, T4 and T3 levels were all within range so I researched NAFLD and T2 diabetes and the evidence suggested to try a ketogenic diet. We found this too restrictive so settled on low carb/high fat and his HbA1c dropped from 83 to 60 and his total cholesterol is now 4.6 plus he came off all his medication, he did not lose much weight but due to other health issues is very inactive. I lost 7lb very easily when we started this but have put is back on and some since because of the lack of reliable sources NDT. dietdoctor is a good website for recipes and suggestions on what to eat and what to avoid, I do not miss potatoes or rice.

I was recently told (having gone for ultrasound for something else) that I had a sludgy gallbladder and that my liver was showing signs of NAFLD. I eat pretty well, have no symptoms and was surprised. I have low thyroid and treat myself with Metavive. I’ve been taking beetroot capsules to try and help and milk thistle. It’s early days and still to hear back from hospital.

Dr. Datis Kharrazian has lots of info on a sludgy gallbladder & congested liver.

His currant website is trying to sell his course(s) but you can glean loads of info by listening to his YouTube’s vids or podcasts. Also reading archived articles. Some if it’s quite ‘sciencey’ & all very interesting.
