Selenium supplements should be either selenium l-selenomethionine or a yeast bound selenium, avoid selenite or selenate forms.

When I was taking selenium I liked this one by Cytoplan:

cytoplan.co.uk/selenium

It's a very small tablet with no odour, many selenium supplements have an unpleasant odour.

Alternatively, you can use Brazil nuts as long as they have been grown in selenium rich soil, you will need to check the packaging to know this.

The amount of selenium contained in Brazil nutst depends in which area the nuts were grown in because the amount of selenium in soil varies. Eastern Amazon and Central Brazil have the highest amounts:

honey-guide.com/2012/11/19/...

The packaging needs to say "Grown in selenium rich soil" and preferably the area and possibly the amount of selenium.

Members have kindly sent me the following information:

Apparently Sainsburys SO organic brazil nuts contain 50mcg selenium per 30g serving of nuts

sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/pro...

and their Fairtrade ones have 75mcg selenium per 30g serving

sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/pro...

One member has said that M&S Natural Brazil Nuts say "harvested by hand in the Amazon forest and naturally high in selenium".

Also, check out Aldi's "The Foodie Market" Brazil nuts, the packaging is said to show selenium content as 79mcg per 30g serving.

Another one is 'My Garden of Eden' Brazil nuts from Home Bargains.. They say "High in Selenium and high in vitamin E" on the front of the packet and the Nutritional Information says "one serving (25g) gives 63ug of Selenium".

Thank you. How much should I have each day?

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toRunner25

Without testing the safe limit is said to be no more than 200mcg per day. I took 100mcg.

Hi SeasideSusie. Do we need to stop selenium and zinc before a thyroid blood test, would they affect the test?.

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toMividauk2

Mividauk2

No, you can continue with them but take them after the test on the day.

What does affect blood tests, including thyroid tests, is biotin which can be a stand alone supplement or as an ingredient in another supplement such as B Complex or a hair/nail supplement. This is because it gives false results when biotin is used in the testing procedure, which most labs so.

And how long does it take to make a difference to how you feel would you say?

No idea I'm afraid. I had a lot going on and my then "practioner" put me on a lot of supplements so it's not possible to say which one did what exactly.

Pure encapsulation are a good brand

I take this and eat Brazils too from time to time

viridian-nutrition.com/blog/

This brand is selenium methionine

200ug/capsule and this is the recommended dose/day

£16.96 for 90

I’m taking terranova brand, it smells a little but does not come back in you. I did not like the Viridian brand, that was very smelly. Solgar do a tiny tablet and is ok.

Are you sure they contain selenium? Does the packet say they are grown in selenium rich soil, if not they wont contain any. See my reply above giving details about Brazil nuts and which brands are known to contain selenium.

I use the Viridian brand. Because they don’t add any fillers etc. Bit more expensive but the supply is usually 90 days of tablets and I buy from Amazon

How many Brazil nuts? Does the packet say they are grown in selenium rich soil, if not they wont contain any. See my reply above giving details about Brazil nuts and which brands are known to contain selenium.

If you know you have high selenium level why continue eating Brazil nuts?

Too much selenium over time can cause the following:

Garlic breath

Nausea

Diarrhea

Skin rashes

Irritability

Metallic taste in the mouth

Brittle hair or nails

Loss of hair or nails

Discoloured teeth

Nervous system problems

I don’t Get a Particular Brand. I’ve not Noticed Any Side-effects.

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toSheffield6

If the pack doesn't say they're grown in selenium rich soil there is probably no selenium in them.

What test did you do to know you have high selenium? Someone asked me today about selenium testing.

Sheffield6 profile image
Sheffield6 in reply toSeasideSusie

A Dietician did a blood test. He wondered why my Selenium was high. I said I liked Brazil nuts.

The discussion about high selenium was with Sheffield6 who jumped on your thread 3 days ago, my reply was to her/him not you. I tend to put the user name at the start of my replies so people know who I am replying to.
