Magnesium - Citrate AND threonate?

Josephineinamachine profile image

Hallo I’ve discovered the amazing benefits of magnesium citrate from this site…really helps with sleep and stomach.

Have been reading about threonate being quite powerful in helping with brain fog.

Is it okay to take both? Does anyone take both?

Thank you 😊

Jo

It is possible to have too much magnesium.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper...

In a perfectly healthy person with perfectly healthy kidneys it is possible that the kidneys would excrete the excess magnesium. I'm not knowledgeable enough to say that this would definitely happen.

For a woman I think the maximum intake of magnesium per day is roughly 300mg - 350mg per day.

If you wanted to take two different kinds of magnesium supplement you could split your intake so that you get half your daily magnesium from each supplement.

I take two forms of magnesium, just be careful of the total amount of elemental magnesium although that's not always easy to find.

Magnesium citrate is said to contain 16% magnesium.

I have seen it said that a 2000 mg dose of Magnesium Threonate contains 144 mg of elemental magnesium.

There is a chart in this link that shows the % elemental magnesium and bioavailability of some forms of magnesium (scroll down) unfortunately Threonate isn't there but Citrate is.

You might be able to find other charts, and some supplements may state the amount of elemental magnesium, so it's something to watch out for.

I don't know anything about threonate but just want to say magnesium citrate has been life changing for me in dealing with incapacitating cramp. I take the Solgar (suitable for vegans) tablets because it states exactly how much magnesium per tablet, preferably after lunch and I will have cramp free sleep. Daily dose 400mg if I get warning signs may also use magnesium oil. I make an effort to drink lots of water.

Learned about magnesium on this site. Awesome! Look to learning about threonite as well.

Hi like you I’m now a magnesium convert! Tried 2 threonate tablets and had a headache next day. Then found this can happen to start with so will go slow. Am on holiday now so not taking it until I’m home and can faff about with the tablets…will try with half to start with..will report back!
