Compounding pharmacy for NDT

Does anyone know the name of a compounding pharmacy for NDT? I find I am intolerant to gluten/lactose/maize starch/dextrose (which is from corn starch), any of which are used as fillers in NDT tabs. N-Throid/WP Thyroid was 'clean' enough to suit me really well, but they have been (temporarily) withdrawn. Thanks.

Hello Diana

I think you find details on the Thyroid uk website who are the charity who support this forum :

Just scroll up and you'll see their logo and their website carries a list of pharmacies and I'm sure I have seen compounded chemists on there.

Hi Pennyannie,

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I have read down the list of pharmacies on Thyroid UK and there may be a couple who do compounded NDT, I'll check them out. Many thanks.

OK then - I read you need to " shop around " for prices ??

So guess you already know exactly what T3 / T4 ratio you need ?

Lucky you !!

Unfortunately, I think you might have problems.

Thyroid USP - the desiccated thyroid powder used as an ingredient for most products in both factories and compounding pharmacies - requires a diluent to achieve consistent potency.

The standard substances allowed include:

Lactose

Sodium Chloride

Starch

Sucrose

Dextrose

Other substances might be permissible, but I think most use the above list. Indeed, most seem to use Lactose and I have never noticed Sodium Chloride being used.

Few medicines contain gluten - so that is likely not an issue.

There seems to be a tendency for ingredients of Thyroid USP to be ignored. Anything the factory or compounder adds will be noticed, but they seem to have treated Thyroid USP as if it were just thyroid with no other ingredients.

Helvella, thank-you for your response. I'll list this here in case others are searching for similar reasons.

I took N-Throid or WP Thyroid (when I could afford it) for many years. I had no problems with the fillers, which are:

N-THROID

Colloidal Silicon Dioxide

Dicalcium Phosphate

Magnesium Stearate

Microcrystalline Cellulose

Croscarmellose Sodium

Stearic Acid

Opadry II 85F19316 Clear – tablet coating

WP Thyroid

Inulin

Medium Chain Triglycerides

They both contain trace amounts of lactose because it is in the porcine powdered thyroid so That level seems alright for me.

Now they have both disappeared - temporarily I hope - I'm seeking a pharmacy who can compound capsules containing some of the above (I especially like the WP one).

I hope this is useful info for someone.

Thanks again.

Hey there again ;

Having just read your other post regarding your endo appointment I was about to PM you where I buy NDT :

Now I see this other post is yours - the whole situation is absolutely ridiculous isn't it :

I buy Thyroid S which has been criticised by many because of all it's " other " contents so I don't know that I can now offer you a full sized replacement and not leave you limping around.

I'm speechless as to your endo's suggestion though similar was suggested to me :

The endo I saw suggested I should reduce my dose of T4 so my TSH may rise enough to qualify for a trial of T3 : though at the time my T3 was at just 25% through the range with a T4 over range at 110%

I'm with Graves post RAI thyroid ablation and became very unwell on T4 only but obviously " looked " good for 68 - so job done ???
