After posting previous results here I was advised to supplement B12 1000iu sublingual with b complex containing folate & then re-test. I did that & now would like some advice on new results if poss?? Seems to me my ferritin, folate & CRP are now high which I think we're ok before..... Thanks in advance 😁

High thyroid antibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s

Presumably you knew this?

Are you on strictly gluten free diet?

Notice your profile has Teva tagged ....Are you lactose intolerant?

Was test done as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Did you stop vitamin B complex a week before test

Ferritin is often high due to inflammation of Hashimoto’s.

Ideally GP should do full iron panel test to see if iron is also high

Ft4 is 74% through range

Ft3 only 22% through range

Helpful calculator for working out percentage through range

chorobytarczycy.eu/kalkulator

Likely to need addition of small doses of T3 prescribed alongside levothyroxine

Yes I knew I had Hashimoto's. My test was done 10am but yes nothing to eat or drink & levo not taken until after test so defo left off for 24hrs. I am gluten free for a long while now. Not sure why Teva is tagged but not aware of any lactose intolerance. GP's don't seem to be interested in prescribing T3 is that correct? Would it be best to have a private consultation. Where in the range should my levels be? I thought once my B12 had risen that my thyroid levels would be better than last time but not sure now.

GP not allowed to initiate T3, due to cost

Has to be via NHS endocrinologist

Email Thyroid UK for list of recommend thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3

Roughly where in the U.K. are you

When adequately treated Ft4 is usually in top third of range and Ft3 at least 60% through range (regardless of how low TSH is)

Extremely important to have optimal vitamin levels too as this helps reduce symptoms and improve how levothyroxine works

I'm in South Yorkshire. Think my vitamin levels should be ok now then if not a little over the top with Vit D but obviously my ft3 & ft4 still haven't evened themselves out properly since you are saying ft4 74% & ft3 22%.... ☹️

How long have you been taking the separate B12 supplement? Your Active B12 is way over range and you're just wasting your money. A good level for Active B12 is over 100 but within range. I would stop the B12 and I'd continue with the B Complex as you need the folate to maintain your current level (your folate level is not high, when there is no proper range we suggest aiming for double figures so your level would be classed as OK). What B Complex brand do you take and the dose?

Vit D is over the level recommended by the Vit D Society and Grassroots Health - 100-150nmol/L - what dose of D3 are you taking, you probably need to reduce it. You just need to maintain your level and I'd go for the top of that range, so as close to 150nmol/L as possible. Are you taking magnesium and Vit K2-MK7 which are important cofactors of D3?

Are you taking any iron tablets, your ferritin level is high but this could be due to inflammation as your CRP (an inflammation marker) is also over range.

Hi SeasideSusie, I've been taking Solgar B12 sublingual 1000iu but stopped about 2 week before my blood test which was done on 12th April. Also was taking Super B-Complex but have also stopped that now too. My Vit D level was low at 37 so supplemented using BetterYou spray at 6000 for 3m ish. Was aiming for 125/150 but it seems it's gone a bit over 😬! I'm no longer taking Vit D either. I was taking magnesium & Vit K2-MK7 but wasn't always consistant with my Magnesium. Not been taking any iron supplements at all - not sure why my Ferritin & CRP is so high but have back & hip aches at the moment.

Your ferritin and CRP could be high due to Hashi's which causes inflammation and both are inflammation markers.

How long were you taking the B12 sublingual? I think you could have stopped these a long time ago. When supplementing it's best to retest periodically to check levels and adjust dose if necessary, I'm on maintenance doses and retest once a year but if I was supplementing to raise levels I'd probably test about every 3-4 months.

I wouldn't stop your B Complex, you need to maintain your folate level where it is now, that's why I asked which brand and dose you take.

Definitely stop the B12.

I wouldn't stop the Vit D either because your level will drop too much, just reduce the dose, maybe 4,000iu daily for now, retest in 3 months.

Sounds like a good plan so will drop my Vit D to a maintence dose & re test in a few months then.. With the. Super B Complex would you take 1 or 2 tablets per day - I think 2 is the full dose? Also there has been mention that my conversion for thyroid is a bit skew??

With Igennus Super B if you take the full dose of 2 tablets to give 400mcg methylfolate you will get 900mcg B12 which is quite a lot. 1 tablet only give 200mcg methylfolate with 450mcg B12.

I need 400mcg methylfolate as a maintenance dose but I don't need the B12.

Excess B12 should be excreted if you want to continue with 2 tablets for the 400mcg methylfolate so if you have a good stock it might be an idea to continue like that for now then test in 3-4 months to say how your levels are.

Yes, your conversion isn't particularly good and as your nutrient levels aren't a problem then you could try supplementing with selenium to see if that helps. If not then consider adding T3.

PS - I was taking B12 for about 4m. My unsupplemented levels were from Nov 2020 & started at B12 375ng/L (211-911), Folate 8.6 (5.4-2.0) & Vit D 31.7nmol.

You've done really well with your B12 and Vit D then 😊 it takes some people much longer to improve their levels.

I noticed your ferratin levels and I'm wondering were your iron levels tested too? If so, was it high? The high crp could be due to that because high iron can cause inflammation.

You mentioned gastritis on another post, has it been resolved? If not, besides you high antibodies I wonder could the gastritis be a culprit of your high crp as well? Gastritis is essentially an inflammation of the stomach lining. So it wouldn't be far fetched.

Hi LadyHypo, no my iron levels weren't tested as this was a Medichecks thyroid test done by myself which didn't include iron. Will need to take a look & see if/when I have ever had them done before to decipher if they were ok at that point. You are correct I have had Gastritis a month or so ago but that seems to have settled as I haven't had any symptoms lately. Probably still some after effects though.
