Antibiotics and levothyroxine

StillEverHopeful profile image

I’ve developed an extremely painful Cystitis and ended up at walk in centre it got so bad. I now have antibiotics to take 2xday and I wondered if I can take them at the same time as my levothyroxine.

There was no way I could avoid antibiotics & it came on so over just a few hours. Never had it before never want it again & there is nothing I can find that could have caused it.

You can take antibiotics but not at the same time as your Levo, leave as long as possible between them. We shouldn't take anything at the same time as Levo.

Thanks you for your help so late at night. I suspect I will be up and down all night for the loo so will take the levo around 4am & antibiotics 8-9 am.

Once the pain goes & I can sleep I’ll set an alarm until I finish them.

I have never experienced such pain with rapid progression from discomfort at 3:30pm to intense pain at 6pm.

So grateful for walk in clinic.

The antibiotics- no matter what time of day you take them - will likely leave you struggling to absorb thyroid meds towards the end of the course. I am working very hard to get my gut bacteria to some kind of sensible level and have been incredibly hypo since I finished the antibiotics. So annoying. I used to get cystitis really often until I got my thyroid meds into a reasonable state. I don’t think I’ve had it as badly as you describe but definitely remember what I call “duel fuelling” on ibuprofen and paracetamol and trying to drink as much water as I could get down myself. It is just so awful! Coffee (even decaf) seems to aggravate it as well :( Not had it in ages now, thank god, but ugh. I feel for you. I remember it well!

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes I’ve doubled up on ibuprofen & paracetamol. Drinking lots of water & avoiding caffeine. I’ve noticed in the past that if I have 3 or more coffees my bladder feels irritated, same with artificial sweeteners. Now limit coffee to one decent cup & avoid sweeteners although they are pesky & sneak into all sorts.

I’ve never experienced anything like this though. Husband doesn’t know what to make of it, especially when I sent him to my elderly mum for piddle pads incase I don’t make it to the loo overnight. :)

I’m due a thyroid check next month so will be interesting to see what happens to my levels.

I think my step count will be improved by the tooing & frowing to bathroom. Working on 200ml water in for each trip to bathroom. Want to get well quickly as son is coming home from University tomorrow.

Oh gosh! Glad that you know about the caffeine and that you still have your sense of humour with the steps! Also pleased that you have a test coming up soon too, so at least if it knocks your numbers sideways you will see that. Hope you are suitably improved for the return of your son tomorrow - that sounds lovely!

I hear laughing is a good medicine- just need to go & watch that poor lawyer who had the cat filter he couldn’t remove. It had me crying with laughter & so pleased he was happy to share the mishap.

So excited I just had a wee with out excruciating pains gone from 11/10 to 8/10

Hot cherry stone bag is helping too.

I’m so sorry! I just went through the exact same thing. It was awful. Here in the US, we have a product called AZO, which is the drug “Phenazopyridine.” We can buy it without prescription in local pharmacies. It “numbs” the bladder within about 30 minutes of dosing and gets you through the first 48 hours while your antibiotic is kicking in. I always keep it on hand, just in case I develop cystitis. If you can’t buy it there without prescription and are still in pain, I would return to the walk-in clinic and ask for it. I hope you feel better very soon.

How smart to give something to numb the bladder while waiting for the antibiotics! I’ll have to look out for it.

It’s morning now I am so glad to say I’m now free of the acute pain. Now planning to sleep a bit longer to catch up on my sleep.

Here’s hoping to never having it again.

There are urinary alkinizer powder sachets you can that help with the pain a lot. Or, if you can't get out to the shops, google the bicarbonate soda to water ratio. I have used it when desperate and within a couple hours the burn when "going" was greatly lessened. Try to get a good probiotic or yoghurt to take once you finish your antibiotics if possible. They will help restore the good gut bacteria that the antibiotics strip away. I hope you feel better soon.

Thankfully the awful pain has gone & I just feel fatigued.

I’ve got some yogurt in the fridge & will probably start on it before I finish the course & order a probiotic. Do you have any recommendations for a probiotic?

I use inulin powder! You can add to yogurt and all sorts! It is a chicory root thing... found it on Amazon and it seems to work...

Hi. I suffered bad bouts of cystitis. The most effected way I found of fast relief was drinking lots of good quality cranberry juice (not the rubbish stuff as useless). The relief is fast. It’s not an old wives tales..which is what Inthought, it’s works.I do this at the first signs of though so I’m not sure once cystitis has taken a real hold if it will be as effective.

Please do try it . Hope it’s improves soon as it horrible to deal with x

Thankfully the antibiotics have started to work & I’m no longer in pain. I did wonder if I should pick up some cranberry juice on the way home from the walk-in centre but was in need of a toilet again.

This is my first time with cystitis & I can’t link its cause to anything either.

I didn’t realise how painful it can be no wonder you have a stock of cranberry juice.

I had Cystitis from the time I was first married at 19. At least twice or more a year. Always ended up with antibiotics and was so sick I couldn't take them quickly enough. I have not had Cystitis now for over ten years and attribute this to a throw away line by a doctor which said - "If all women showered each time after a bowel movement and washed themselves very well, they wouldn't get Cystitis." Not always easy if you are not at home, but I have used this advice for years. The doctor added that it is the activity when having sex that pushes any minute bit of fecal matter into the urinary tract.
