I have recently took labs my tsh is 0.19 and t3 is 4.3. I take tirosint 50mcg (levothyroxine capsule) and cytomel 5mcg. She wants to reduce my dosage to 25mcg and keep the cytomel 5mcg. She said on the former thyroid dosage I was hyperthyroid and I wanted to know if my body would adjust. Did anyone here have to lower t4 with their t3 hormone medication?
My doctor wants to reduce my t4 in half. - Thyroid UK
My doctor wants to reduce my t4 in half.
If you are hypo you CANNOT then become hyper - instead you can be over-medicated - but only when free T3 is over-range (and yours is just a twitch over).
Is it worth reducing T4 meds? - possibly but
(a) how do you feel?
(b) what was your last free T4 result (and where in range was it)
(c) did you have an early morning, fasting blood draw with 8 - 12 hours from taking your T3 meds and 24 hours from your T4 meds?
If you feel good; if free T4 is less than 60% through range; if you took your T3 meds more recently than 8 hours from the blood test - I'd want to stay on the existing level of meds.
Otherwise, halving your T4 meds when you're on such a modest amount to start with seems extreme; perhaps just reduce on alternate days and see how that makes you feel?

I find your advice is helpful I do know on a reduced dose of t4 I felt bad. I guess a half of a cytomel pill from 5mcg to 2.5 mcg could help.
Worth a try I guess - but it's such a tiny dose to start with ... I'd rather feel well than worry abut a very very slightly over-range T3 result
So true it's like things won't be perfect but I accept that fact.
