Serum iron: 55 to 70% of the range, higher end for men - yours is 32.07% through range
Saturation: optimal is 35 to 45%, higher end for men - yours is 28%
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC): Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron, High in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron - yours is 57.43% through range
Ferritin: Low level virtually always indicates need for iron supplementation - yours is 21.55% through range. However, there seems to be a lot of confusion about ranges for ferritin and what is an optimal level. I have read that the optimal ferritin level for thyroid function is between 90-110 ng/ml.
I was ignorant of the information regarding not eating or taking any supplements, I know the doctor will not allow another test, is there anywhere I could request private test?
I interpreted these results as high ferritin + low iron or am I reading it wrong?
Medichecks do an Iron Deficiency Check which is the complete iron panel and it can be done by fingerprick or venous blood draw (extra cost for the blood draw).
Your serum iron is lower than optimal but I wouldn't class your ferritin as high. If you go by range your ferritin is low in range, if you go by the apparently optimal level for thyroid function it's at the top end of the range so wouldn't need to go any higher.
Ranges for ferritin are very confusing. The private labs all use the range 13-150 for females, regardless of whether pre or post menopause. My GP surgery uses the range of 15-300 for everyone, females and males. A range going up to 400 we more often see for males on here. So you can see how difficult it is when it comes to ferritin. Personally I go by the optimal for thyroid function and I would satisfied if I could get mine up to 100 (but I'm struggling!).
Hello Christinamaria11,I’m interested in your comment about ferritin, that the upper limit in post menopausal women is 400. Mine is presently 364, so if you could let me know where you got this info I’d be grateful as it would help me in my discussions with the GP.
