Good Afternoon everyone Hope you all had a lovely Christmas...
I had Thyroid blood test on 9/12/20
I rang my surgery for my results.. I was disappointed that they didn’t have all the results I wanted to know.. They gave me which I will list... I asked for last year to compare and was only given my TSH... I was advised to speak to a doctor in a weeks time. I opted to speak to nurse practitioner on 11/1/21 hopefully she’ll have some answers.. The real reason for my test that I booked with GP I was feeling lethargic. Mood swings. Weight gain. Finger nails brittle and hair loss.. The Gp booked full blood could as well as TSH T4 and Ferritin.. When I called today to find out if my test were ok...
I was assured the test was normal.. I don’t know what’s normal.. I only have limited results as they couldn’t find any T4 results that’s why I have a telephone consultation to find out more..I’m really disappointed I do like my surgery.. Test results for 9/12/20
TSH 3.24
Ferritin 71.3
No T4
9/12/19
TSH 1.97
No T4
No Ferritin
I’m just wondering if I should have a private test done
Love to read your comments perhaps advice what I should do..
Looking at previous post, you take 100mcg levothyroxine
Do you always get same brand of levothyroxine
TSH is far too high for someone on levothyroxine
TSH must be under 2. Most people on levothyroxine will have TSH under one when adequately treated
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies
Ask GP to test vitamin levels
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins
Thank you for replying.. My test was done at 08:30 and I didn’t take my levothyroxine for 24hrs before test. I took my tablet straight after my blood test...
Test results are meaningless without the reference ranges that come with them. Please ask the receptionist for a print out of your results, the reference ranges should be on there.
Also, testing TSH alone is totally inadequate because it can't indicate Central Hypothyroidism (when the problem lies with the pituitary or the hypothalamus and is indicated when theTSH can be low, normal or slightly elevated along with a low/below range FT4).
For a full picture you need TSH, FT4, FT3, Thyroid antibodies and it's also useful to have all nutrients tested - Vit D, B12, Folate, Ferritin.
