Losing my hair

Hello, I was diagnosed under active 3 years ago, in the past 6 months every time I brush my hair loads comes out. I feel I’ve lost 25% of my hair and my scalp is really dry.

I did go on a vegan and then vegetarian diet during this time but had to stop due to feeling tired and weak.

After reading some things on here, I think I may be low in iron and ferritin ??

Can anyone give me any suggestions as my Doctors are so bad and I get a different Dr every time I go there’s no consistency there.

Thank you in advance.

You could have low ferritin because of your previous diet. Ferritin needs to be over 80 for hair growth and when mine was low I took Spatone and ate pate twice a week. Also my thyroid levels were off which can also cause hair loss. I think you need a full thyroid function blood test which is the TSH, T4 and T3. Also a vitamin test of B12, Iron and ferritin, vitamin D and Folate. Low vitamin D can also cause hair loss. I use Medichecks for my private blood tests and there are codes available on this site for discounts.

Are you in U.K. or USA

You need to test ferritin (and zinc can be linked to hairloss)

USA and rest of world lab testing options

Obviously being vegan or vegetarian would reduce iron available in diet and may be responsible for dip in iron or ferritin

It can take long time to recover low ferritin levels

But it’s common to have low vitamin levels, especially ferritin if under medicated, when were thyroid levels last tested

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 annually

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

If/when also on T3, make sure to take last third or quarter of daily dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins
