Losing hair quickly

I have long hair. I am getting really worried as my hair is coming out alot very quick. Every time I brush hair there is alot of hair in brush. I can feel terrible thinning on scalp. I am on same medication. 50mcg of liothyrinine. Hair is also very fine and static. It is really very depressing as love long hair. Can anyone help with what is cause and how to put right.

What’s your most recent TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 results

Day before test split T3 into 3 smaller doses spread through the day and last dose 8-12 hours before test at 8am

20mcg waking, 20mcg mid afternoon and 10mcg at 8pm

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Have you done full iron panel test

Not just ferritin

Have you tested zinc levels

Hairloss can be linked to low zinc

I had routine blood tests a few weeks ago through gp. She said vit b 12 was very high. Everything else normal including ferritin. I was taking 2 igennus super b complex a day and said that was causing high b12 so cut it to one a day. Also take 5000 iu of vit d daily with k2 and vit c powder. About a month ago started taking 500 mg of astragalus and nac to boost immunity as have been getting viruses one after the other

so what are your TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 results

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply to SlowDragon

I don't know. Had only TSH tested which is 0.03.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to katherine107

obviously that’s completely inadequate

what were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 results

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Remember to stop taking any supplements that contain biotin 5-7 days before any tests as biotin can falsely affect test results

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am (and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test)

Day before test split T3 into 3 doses and take last dose approx 8-12 hours before test

This gives highest TSH and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

presumably you have Hashimoto’s?

Autoimmune thyroid disease usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies …..But if both TPO and TG antibodies are negative, an ultrasound scan of thyroid can diagnose

EDS and Hashimoto’s often go together

Are you on strictly gluten free diet and/or dairy free diet?

katherine107 in reply to SlowDragon

I have eds as well as thyroid disease. Not gluten or dairy free. I need to be tested properly. Which is the best test please and who will take blood?

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to katherine107

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Many EDS members with Hashimoto’s find strictly gluten free diet very beneficial

Always worth trying

approx 5% with Hashimoto's test positive for coeliac, but a further 80% find strictly gluten free diet helps or is essential due to gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

While still eating high gluten diet ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first

or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Non Coeliac Gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and autoimmune disease

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/296...

The predominance of Hashimoto thyroiditis represents an interesting finding, since it has been indirectly confirmed by an Italian study, showing that autoimmune thyroid disease is a risk factor for the evolution towards NCGS in a group of patients with minimal duodenal inflammation. On these bases, an autoimmune stigma in NCGS is strongly supported

nuclmed.gr/wp/wp-content/up...

In summary, whereas it is not yet clear whether a gluten free diet can prevent autoimmune diseases, it is worth mentioning that HT patients with or without CD benefit from a diet low in gluten as far as the progression and the potential disease complications are concerned

restartmed.com/hashimotos-g...

Despite the fact that 5-10% of patients have Celiac disease, in my experience and in the experience of many other physicians, at least 80% + of patients with Hashimoto's who go gluten-free notice a reduction in their symptoms almost immediately.

I have Alopecia Areata too which indicates that all of my hair falls out and it is one of my multiple autoimmune diseases. It usualy grows back slowly only to fall out again but we don't feel good if we've no hair.

I am so sorry you have this. Is it permanent? I suppose it is if autoimmune.

Did you have covid or a fever 2-3 months ago? That will cause hair loss. (I went through it last February, ie hair loss after covid). If so, it will grow back. Putting aloe vera extract on it is very helpful. If that is not the case, you might also check hormone levels, especially testosterone (that it is not too high), as well as other suggestions given here. All the best and be of good cheer, hopefully it will resolve itself in a few weeks.

I haven't had covid but had two virul infections. No fever. The aloe Vera is it an oil

Sharoosz in reply to katherine107

Aloe Vera can be taken straight from the plant (break off a piece of leaf and put the gel straight on your scalp.) Probably easier is to buy it, either in gel form or extract (probably most convenient as it's like water and you can put it on your scalp and then dry your hair.) My hair came back very well. My hairdresser had a client who lost 70% of her hair and did the same, she's back to normal. Even if your problem isn't from a fever, aloe will not hurt anything and might be a great help. All the best!

Check iron levels as it also effect the hair. And use some ayurveda oil to gro wback your hair just like i did and i grow back the hair using the follwibg oil by massaging it 2 hours before taking bath. The name off hair oil is divya kesh taila and its available on ebay. Make sure that when you take bath do not use hot/warm water on your head and it damages the hair follicles. I knwo how bad it feels when you start losibg hair. Hope that the problem is solved quickly. Regards

Thankyou for this. Do you mean use cold water to wash hair?

Bhattinsami profile image
Bhattinsami

yes it means wash hair with water like room temperature which is not hot and you can manage as these days it’s winter so i know it’s difficult but warm and hot water damages hair
