Why am I loosing my hair? I have an underachieve thyroid (since about 20 years) and all of a sudden I have started to loose my hair about six or seven months ago. Has this happened to anyone else? Can anyone tell me why?

Yes I lose hair. Losing hair is a sign of not enough medication. Do you have results if any blood tests?

Do get your vitamin D and Iron checked. When my d was 61 I lost about 50% of my hair over a year. It’s growing back now I am taking D in large amounts.

How much D do you take?

I am taking 10000 a day atm. I also taking K2 and boron and am using a magnesium spray .

I will be tested again very soon to see if D is getting higher. I am aiming for around 200.

I feel so much better already.

Looking at previous posts are you taking Levothyroxine or NDT?

Had any medication changes

When were thyroid and vitamins last tested?

Do you have Hashimoto's or previously been hyperthyroid?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Low ferritin is often cause of hairloss

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water . This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Worth testing zinc levels too

I have just replied to another member about hairloss. There is something wrong with your thyroid levels - taking selenium and zinc might help or it could even be low ferritin so I would check that out. In my case it was my thyroid not working properly. My hair is starting to grown back now because I am in remission so don't lose hope. When your body is in crisis the first thing it does is shed hair because hair is not necessary for good health I'm afraid. When I was losing hundreds of hairs a day I asked for help from my doctor who told me it was just hair perhaps it was because he was bald that he was so unsympathetic. Most Doctors will not be bothered if you are losing your hair and will try to tell you it is either the menopause or aging which is rubbish! I have an Aunt in her 80s with a full head of hair. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I don’t have a thyroid due to cancer and my Hashimotos caused Pernicious Anemia and iron deficiency. Before those were treated I lost as much hair as a cancer patient- the floor was covered in hair all the time. Now that I’m on B12 injections and daily iron I lose a normal amount. It’s amqzing.
