Doctor won't prescribe Iron

So long story short, in the past I have been frequently low in Iron. Was therefore prescribed Ferrous Fumarate about 2 years ago and since then I have used SpaTone, as well as eating more red meat. For that reason I stopped requesting FF (as I prefer something gentler on stomach). Also supplemented other Vits B12, Vit D etc myself .

Unfortunately I am now on Universal Credit and had to take the 'Advance' which has reduced what I get and am now scrimping for every last penny.

So I asked my G.P. if they would reinstate my ferrous fumarate prescription, I explained that I think it really important as I need it to support my thyroid function, and get chronically fatigued and said I was sorry to ask but could no longer afford to supplement myself as on UC. I was thinking about also asking for other vital vits (such as D) on prescription if successful.

This morning I got a text refusing the prescription as my Iron levels are in range so apparently I don't need any. My point was that the reason my levels are in range is precisely because I have been self supplementing.

I think the stress of being out of work and ill is getting to me because I cried over it. I can't seem to think logically about anything much these days and am wondering if I am being a bit presumptuous?

Have a phone appointment tomorrow but am wondering if it's worth asking again. What do you think?

I completely sympathise. I’ve just asked for B12 and folic acid as I’m right at the bottom end of the range in these and GP wouldn’t have it. I have to supplement myself. I cried on the phone too. I’m so exhausted. I suggest sending a letter with it all in then it’s not rushed on the phone? That’s what I'm doing.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion to write in. Think I will do that instead of asking verbally and being refused again!

It gives you time to write everything down and present the facts. I used to take things in with me but on the phone as they are doing now it makes everything so much harder. Good luck
