D3 after TT

I was told by my endo to start taking d3 in preparation for my total thyroidectomy back in March. He didn’t mention dose nor gave me a prescription. Nor said i should continue after surgery. I haven’t stopped as i have from sites like these read that most people take them. My question is does anyone know the dosage that would be good to take and are we meant to carry on taking d3 ad infinitum? i ask my endo all sorts of questions and have now given up as I don’t get replies.

I would do a postal test to check your level and then dose accordingly. Your level is good around 100 if you are in the UK. Always good to take a maintenance dose during winter. How much are you taking ?

VitD is a steroidal pro-hormone and anti-inflammatory - so much more than a vitamin.

Maybe it was to try and avoid a sudden drop in serum calcium if your parathyroid glands were damaged? Patients with hypoparathyroidism take a prescription-only form of vitamin D.

When taking levothyroxine important to retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 annually

On vitamin D supplements, retest vitamin D levels twice year

GP will often only prescribe Vitamin D to bring levels to 50nmol. Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

But improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need

Calculator for working out dose you may need to bring level to 40ng/ml = 100nmol

With your Vit D, are you also taking it's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7?

Magnesium best taken in the afternoon or evening, but must be four hours away from levothyroxine
