surprised they wont test,as I thought this one was fairly standard
I am currently taking ADCALD3 on prescription
someone on here though did say I would be better off taking something different,but as money is tight and I am getting this free,,,also I do see an improvement since taking it
I am no longer having to take a daily nap,,only when I have over done it
It was probably suggested that you take something different because there's very little D3 in Adcal, but a lot of calcium :
Calcium carbonate: 1500mg equivalent to 600mg of elemental calcium
Colecalciferol: 400iu equivalent to 10μg vitamin D3
Do you need all that extra calcium, given that D3 increases absorption of calcium from food, anyway. I rather doubt it. Especially if you aren't taking vit K2 to make sure all that calcium goes into the bones rather than tissues.
But doctors prescribe that because it's cheap - of course it's cheap! There's hardly any D3 in it!
Mandy, I probably shouldn't be saying this, but... What is the point of taking a vit D supplement if you don't eat any fat to absorb it? Or not enough fat, anyway. That's probably why you don't feel any benefit.

That is my advice. Take it or leave it. Eat more fat. That is not running down your diet, that is the way it is. It is not my fault that vit d3 is fat soluble, it's a fact of nature. What is more, I'm not the only one that has said that, so why pick on me. Go shout at someone else. And, frankly, I don't know why I bother. Your attitude towards people who are just trying to help you, leaves a lot to be desired. So, in future, I won't bother.
hi there mandy , I think you gripped the wrong end of the stick with what g.g. said ..... I don't think that she was commenting on your current ''diet'' for you to succeed in your weight problem , but more so because some meds & vitamins HAVE to be managed i.e. some have to be taken an hour before food /with water only / with food / or with only certain things etc. ... and vitd3 will only be fully absorbed in your system with dietry fats [ they are NOT the fats that you are obviously thinking about ] which are good for you and you need them to remain healthy . we all need a combination of foods to achieve this ...... lastly my lady takes DESUNIN 800iu - which is the equivalent to 2000 but easier to absorb ..... hope this helps alan xxx
mandy72 you need fats for the VitD to absorb. Try a teaspoon of coconut oil or olive oil, they are not the sort of rubbish fats whereby you gain weight. And don't be so rude to people who are trying to help you or you will find you won't get any responses to any further questions
Salmon , oily fish omega oils are good to have with vit d .I see Mandy is following slimming world as I am and was given the 12 week count down free by gp . That was a few years ago .i lost 7 stone . It changed my way of eating it's not a diet it's about healthy choices . I stick to natural foods , but still have to use supplements daily , I also have butter for vit d and coconut oil we are allowed to eat these in smaller quantities
Hi mandy72 Have a look back at one of your old threads here healthunlocked.com/thyroidu... where you had a lot of advice about D3. You really need to get it tested -£28 from City Assays, link in my reply in that thread.
When I had mine tested, I was severely deficient at 15 and I started on 40,000iu daily for 2 or 3 weeks, then reduced to 5,000iu daily. Now my level is really good I still take a maintenance dose of 5,000iu 3-5 days a week depending on summer/winter. So going higher than 2,000iu daily isn't dangerous but you have to know if you need it, therefore testing is important. Re-testing is recommended by the Lab a couple of times a year.
Don't forget K2-MK7 is also needed when taking Vit D, and as Greygoose says it is fat soluble so you need some dietary fat to go with it, maybe some butter on a piece of toast??? I've looked at the label of the Healthy Origins D3 and it seems to be a softgel but it doesn't give 'other ingredients'. The softgel I take contains D3 and extra virgin olive oil so there is some good fat already in it to aid absorption but I usually include some fat such as a full fat yogurt or something, there's nothing on yours to say.
I use biotics research biomulsion D forte. One drop is 2000iu, so if you need more just take extra drops. But it's a good idea to know what your level is first. The drops are in oil so easily absorbed. Take with a fatty meal also. A bottle looks expensive but lasts about a year.
I probably do need the calcium as I have osteoporosis in my spine
Dr Myhill - drmyhill.co.uk has some very good suggestions for osteoporosis ..... It is more than just calcium. You need lots more
My Pilates teacher who is also a qualified physiotherapist ( sure most people on here must know that by now, I'm always saying it) anyway our group is almost completely older ladies and she is always saying 'forget milk and calcium, ladies, what you need is vit D3 and vitamin K for strong bones plus weight bearing exercise.
That's not to say you should avoid milk if you like it but I don't like milk and yoghurt and don't tend to eat a huge amount of cheese although I do eat it, I make up for the milk etc with loads of leafy green vegetables and vits D and K.

I used to take the pro bio,s but stopped due to costs as my budjet just keeps shrinking,but I may start again and will also add some vitamin k as three people now have recommended it
I did ask at the lupus unit yesterday about vitimin k but they didn't think it was needed

Donna, if you want to reply to someone, you have to click on the green reply button at the bottom of their comment. Otherwise, they will not be notified that you have replied. I just found your reply to me by chance. Who did you ask in the lupus clinic? I wouldn't imagine they have any idea! And it's not just vit K, it's vit K2. Vit K1 is for blood clotting. K2 is completely different, it's for the calcium. So, if you just said vit K, they would probably think you meant K1, and no, that would not be necessary. But, K2 is.
Plus, as said before, it's not just calcium you need for bones, it's also magnesium, and vit A, and vit D, and zinc, etc etc etc. Absolutely no point in taking a load of calcium if you don't balance it with all the other stuff.
And, yes, omeprazole will cause osteoporosis, because you will not be able to absorb all those nutrients needed to make strong bones. If you've been taking it for years, you are probably deficient in everything, not just vit D. How many things have they tested? Have they tested vit B12?
Why are you taking omeprazole, if you don't mind me asking? If it's for acid reflux, you probably had low acid, not high acid. But, as you've been taking it for years, it could be difficult to wean off it. It should only be taken for a max of 8 weeks, anyway. I think you really ought to have a serious conversation with your doctor about that.
will discuss it at the double with the gp,have tried twice to wean myself off,but yesterday was told to keep taking it as I have a polyp and two of my meds,aspirin for my APS and naprosyn for my growing list of inflammatory problems need to be cushioned by the omeprazole
OK, I see. So, if that is the case, they should be monitoring your nutrients to make sure none of them are deficient. But, they don't seem to think about that. Ask for at least B12, folate and ferritin to be tested.
You will also be experiencing difficulty absorbing your thyroid hormone replacement, I should imagine. How are your levels?

I too have been on omeprazole for years due to severe GERD! It's so bad my throat recently closed up and my vocal cords were unable to be seen! I had an MRI a week ago to c my vocal cords! I cud not afford to go bak to c the specialist so he put his nurse t tell me of results which he said no different! I have spot in my vocal cord, but he said he won't operation to nippy it cuz I'm too hi risk for any surgery! Lol.. Nice and he wants to c me in 2 weeks anyway! I understand about GERD and not being on omeprazole! It's awful, but try going gluten free! I did it for a couple of months and my tummy felt better than ever! Oddly enough when I went GF is when the throat issues exacerbated! I'm sure it wa coincidence! Still have trouble swallowing and strain on voice and hoarseness! So I'm at a standstill & have no idea what to do or who to go to! I also understand that taking omeprazole for long periods of time is no good! I had osteoporosis too! Was put on monthly pill for about a year and it worked! What are they doing for your osteoporosis? Good luck!
Hi Mandy I'd ask another Dr in your surgery as Vit D testing is pretty standard. This time maybe just ask for Vitamin D levels without specifically saying D3 and they should come back with separate results for D2 and D3 and then the total. Just a thought x
mandy72, you may not feel any different unless you were already having symptoms of deficiency. Not everyone has symptoms. The important thing is that you have the right amount of d in your system - not too much nor too little - and the only way to know is to be tested. If your gp won't test, the tests are available online as kelsam21 mentioned.
If you want to ensure you're retaining it while still staying on a weight loss diet, identify the fattiest food you eat every day (a little butter on your toast? an egg? a little dressing on salad?) and take your supplement with that and it will help you absorb and retain it.
