Better You Vegan Health Daily Oral Spray. Is it OK to try this? I'm Not sleeping.

I am thinking of buying this, as I am unable to absorb anything now, (chronic indigestion),I have been applying magnesium chloride to my legs, feet & hips where the muscle/neuro pain is worst, but am concerned that I will be unbalanced with the calcium which needs to be equal to the magnesium, especially as I am under range. My skin is very bad too,peeling off! & as I have low iron & worsening Alopecia I thought I might try it, as it contains (in topical form) both D3, calcium & iron.

What do you think? has anyone tried this? its on special offer right now.

Iron will block the absorption of all the vitamins - you won't absorb a single one! Iron should be taken at least two hours away from any other supplement except vit C, which is necessary to aid absorption of iron, and protect the stomach.

Also the iron and calcium will bind together and you won't be able to absorb either of them.

Yes! that is 1 of the reasons I am interested in 'topical iron'. I take a vitamin D oil that bypasses the gut, also magnesium oil that I rub on skin - as they say that you don't need to worry about chelation in the gut as it goes straight to the blood stream.

So are you saying that calcium & iron fight for reception in the blood stream too?

That may be so. But, you're far more likely to be deficient in magnesium than you are in calcium. Most people are deficient in magnesium because soils are depleted so they don't get much from their food. Calcium, on the other hand, is there in abundance.

If you're worried, get your calcium tested. But, no point in testing magnesium due to the way the body handles magnesium. You can have a very good blood test result, but still be deficient.

But I really wouldn't use that spray, it's the silliest supplement I've ever heard of!

Your chronic indigestion, by the way, is probably caused by low stomach acid. Try taking vit C with every meal, see if it helps.

Thank you gg. As always your advice is spot on. I don't know if I'm deficient right now in magnesium, but I take it for crippling pain, it's the only thing that helps. I read today that Magnesium & calcium must be balanced, but I cannot digest the prescribed calcium carbonate, so I look for alternatives as I have hypocalcaemia & have no way of knowing if that's why my health is so dire right now, only that when I had these problems before it was the low calcium?

I take apple cider vinegar & vitamin C at meals, & eat a pack of pate each week, but I will look for an oral form of iron now.

Needing to be balanced does not mean that you have to take both at the same time. You will be getting calcium from your food, so I doubt you'll need to take calcium supplements - which is a very, very bad idea, anyway. So, forget the calcium and just take the magnesium. Any excess magnesium will be excreted. Excess calcium will not, it will build up in your arteries and soft tissues.

How is your vit D? Are you supplementing that? Taking vit D increases absorption of calcium from food. But, you must take vit K2-MK7 as well, to make sure the extra calcium goes into the teeth and bones, and doesn't build up in the soft tissues.

The reason I don't take the prescribed calcium carbonate is because it makes me ill & does not put me in range. I have coeliac, but cannot afford gluten free food, but when I was gluten free it made no difference.

I came across several old boxes of prescribed calcichew lately & thought I had better give it another go - experiment, to see if the low calcium is to blame for all the woes. Also I read of dire warnings of taking 1 or other as opposed to both calcium & magnesium, so though I figured it was probably 'snake oil sales talk' I had better check with you 1st! The only time that I got the calcium in range was when I started taking very high dose vitamin D, but it was only just in range, & didn't last long.

I am also dairy intolerant. The Endocrinologist locum that I saw many years ago told me off for taking the GP prescribed calcichew, He didn't think carbonate was a good idea either, told me to buy sainsberries fortified orange juice (we don't have sainsberries here or fortified anything,) & gave me a script for what I now know must have been vitamin D3 in (latin) to take to hospital. The hospital handed me a package. When I got home & opened it ... inside was a bottle of ... Calichew! They don't prescribe D3 here, it's too expensive compared with carbonate. I had been buying carbonate with D3 for years for my osteoporosis, I got kidney stones & still ended up with zero calcium & D3 in blood, very high BP, osteopenia & wedging of the spine. I just don't absorb nutrients, Mum was the same.

I have been buying vitamin D3 + K2 for years, I'm currently taking D3 tabs + a combo D3 & K2 in concentrated sublingual oil " Nature by GloryFeel Vitamin D3+K2 -2,550".

My aim is to get level of D3 to 100 as I have put on a lot of weight.

I will have to try & find a finger prick or saliva test merchant that ships to Jersey, or as I call them "spit & prick traders!" to monitor- as I am done with GP's who charge me £60 a month then don't test anything but TSH! And then charge me another £20 to phone me to tell me that they won't tell me what the TSH is!

So gg, does excess Magnesium that enters the blood stream via skin get excreted the same as it would orally?

Well, as I said, it's not a good thing to take. It is very badly absorbed.

Why would you need to buy gluten-free foods? If you cook everything from scratch, you just leave out all traces of gluten. It's not that difficult. I've done it.

Calcium is neither a cure, nor a treatment for osteoporosis. There are other nutrients that are far more important for bones. I would suggest you check out the bone forum on HU, they'll be able to tell you more about it than me.

But, yes, kidney stones is what you're likely to end up with if you take calcium supplements. The vit D supplements that contain calcium contain far more calcium than vit D. I would suggest you buy vit D at a higher dose, without the calcium.

Not absorbing nutrients is due to low stomach acid. What you need to do is raise the stomach acid.
