Painfull Mouth

For the last several months my mouth hurts so bad, I was deficient in iron and B12 severly I have been taking my supplement every day. But the pain in my mouth is not going away I had to find tooth paste with no mint at all and Colgate has a watermelon one so that was a bit better. When you look in my mouth you can see how irritated it is. I have read diabetes can cause it too but I already take Metformin. Since I still have the pain I ordered liquid iron and B12 too see if I'm not absorbing it ( I had gastric bypass in 2009 ) I also keep getting swollen glands under my jaw ( my Dr said no fever not to worry ) I have an appt with my Endo on Sept 9 for another ultrasound on a solid nodule and I have 3 cousins that have had Thyroid Cancer ( papillary ) My Thyroglobulin ( Not Thyroglobulin Antibodies ) are high. I was reading last night that being hypo can do this too. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone have any ideas ? My Rhumetologist tested me for lots of stuff including Sgrojans and was negative. I'm at a loss here...Ugh

What B12 are you currently taking...is it sublingual B12 (eg Jarrow B12) or mouth spray (eg Better You) ?

Can be difficult/impossible to absorb B12 in the gut

How low was B12?

If you were severely deficient in B12 you should have been tested for Pernicious Anaemia and likely given B12 Injections...starting with loading injections, every few days or daily until symptoms improved

Are you also taking vitamin B complex?

it’s recommended also to supplement a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

Thank you for your reply I was taking B12 pills and Slow FE Iron..I ordered both on Amazon in liquid form to see if I absorb it better. I am asking my Endo to repeat my bloodwork when I see her. My B12 wasn't crazy low but my PCP likes it to be higher.

My Ferratin was a 6 ( 11 ngm/ml - 307 ngm/ml ) May 23 2020 and I was sent to a hematologist and she refused to do an Iron infusion said to try supplements first but I had been taking supplements and my PCP was angry she wouldn't do it.

Folate 15.6 ngm/ml REf >= 5.4 ngm/ml May 23, 2020

May 23, 2020 B12 was a 419 ( 193 pg/ml 986 pg/ml ) She wanted it to be higher...3 years in a row 2017, ( 2000 pg/ml 2018 1188 pg/ml, 2019 1391pg/ml same range 193 pg/ml to 986 pg/ml and I was supplementing B12 at all beside what was in my Multi Vitamin My Liver numbers were great May 23, 2020

Vit D 28 ngm/ml 30ngm/ml - 100 ngm/ml

I do have the MTHFR gene

I will switch my B Complex for a better one I was taking cheap stuff and I certainly do stop B Complex before bloodwork ( Thanks to you )

I'm thinking I'm having a hard time absorbing the vitamins because of the Weight Loss surgery.

When my husband looked in my mouth he can see white surface blister looking but not like a blister you would break. Hard to explain.

nhs.uk/conditions/oral-thru... have you ruled out oral thrush? A couple of photos on nhs site and I thought it worth mentioning just in case

I have had Oral Thrush twice from Amoxicillion and this definitely doesn't seem the same my glands under my jaw are swollen and my PCP said not to worry since I have no fever

My sister is very ill with untreated HYPOthyroid Disease ..for many many years.

She lives abroad and has been medically neglected a very long time.

she recently explained to me her mouth was very painful and blistering including her lips .. I advised her to ask her Doctor for Nystatin liquid as recommended by my Daughter, a Dental Therapist.. it worked !

It’s gone !

I believe it’s common in Diabetic patients ....as my Sister is .

Might be worth a try .. Good Luck

You need to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

years ago and before I was ever diagnosed with PA, I went to the doctor for lesions/blisters on my tongue which is quite painful at times, but the moron physician told me I had geographical tongue. turns out this is part of mine and others disease of Pernicious Anemia, I've had mine for over 20 years now, and though it never fully goes away and really waxes and wanes, it does get flared up with certain fruits such as citrus, etc. I wish you the best on your search, hopefully you don't have PA.

I am seeing an oral surgeon today I have been on prednisone for a month. Most of the blisters are gone but my mouth is so sensitive I still have to use children's toothpaste and certain foods are still nothing me. Im going to be tested for Sjogrens with a lip biopsy. But some of my bloodwork is coming back to a form.of lupus that causes blood clots. What is it they test for PA? I have been taking 2 iron tablets a day and my body hates it. I have a feeling my mouth will never feel better. feeling

I was initially told after a probe was inserted down my nasal cavity and into my stomach that I had a PH of 7.5, which is indicative of Pernicious Anemia. I immediately started researching and diagnosed myself based upon the PH Test. Found the quickest avenue to rule out PA was to have a Serum Gastrin Test ordered by Endocrinologist, along with an IFA autoimmune Test, if the Serum Gastrin levels come back flagged as elevated you most certainly will have PA. just my two cents.

Respectfully,

That must be awful, being forced to wait so long.

I was lucky. I needed emergency dental treatment during lockdown but had no problems getting an appointment.

It's been awful here I was supposed to have my Thyroid Ultrasound at the Endo in April and she cancelled and changed it to August then tried to cancel that one too and I told them no they can't do that with my family history of Thyroid Cancer and she can't doing this or she needed to send me to the hospital for my Ultrasound then she says I need to do it so I can see if the nodule grew so I said to her then why cancel again. So they gave me Sept 9...

Hi have a look on pernicious anaemia help group, with you having gastric bypass unfortunately your body will suffer from b12 problems (sore mouth is one of the many symptoms) and I'm sure having that surgery means only way you can absorb b12 is by injections. If you have blood tests done best to be free of any b12 supplements for 3-4months, as will be false reads unfortunately

I didn't know that, I just started with liquid B12 this painful mouth is just ridiculous..I will definitely check out that group thank you for your help

Another thing with b complex best taking for about 4 months then having a break from it, one of the b vits you can overdose on (think its b6 but not 100%) the rest is water soluble so any excess gets excreated when going to the toilet
