Metavive 1 used to be 15mg capsules and Metavive 11 used to come in 30mg natural dedicated thyroid. Because of government regulations for supplements and not prescription drugs they have had to add extra ingredients and call it ‘porcine thyroid complex’ adding 5’ribonucleotides. I rang the chemist at Natural Health Choice Ltd who said that although Metavive 1 is now 40mg and Metavive 11 is now 80mg, Metavive 1 still has only 15mg NDT and Metavive 11 still has only 30mg NDT.

The reason for my post is that I have been perfectly well on the old dosage of 45mg of NDT And the chemist assured me that the added ingredients are natural ingredients , I am feeling very tired since taking the new capsules and I would be grateful to hear how others are coping with the new dosages

It has to be made clear that Metavive is not NDT nor has it ever been, it is a thyroid glandular sold as a food supplement with no declared hormone content. If there was any declared hormone content then it would be a prescription item.

They explain on their website:

Please note that the change in weight of active ingredients shown on the new product label is simply due to the addition of nucleotides to the original formula. The weight of meat within each capsule has not changed, so to all our regular customers who are used to the original formulation, please continue using this new product the same as you did previously.

Thankyou Seaside Susie for your reply. Please could you advise the difference between thyroid glandular and desiccated thyroid

. I have been taking Metavive for a couple of years and was feeling fine and only after taking the new capsules have I felt tired

I am confused now as to what action to take. Help !!!!

NDT contains the full spectrum of thyroid hormones with measured amounts under strict control and hormone content declared.

A thyroid glandular takes the whole thyroid tissue and there is no declared hormone content, hence it doesn't require a prescription and is sold as a supplement. By using the whole gland there may or may not be some thyroid hormone but it is not measured or under strict control like NDT so even if there is any there each batch could be different.

Having said that, some people do very well on Metavive (and some don't).

Hi Myra,

Like you I was fine on Metavive, but I'm finding it difficult getting used to the new formula. I find it infuriating that they can just change the ingredients without warning. I feel as though we are guinea pigs for the new product. I would happily go back to the old product, but of course they've stopped making it.

I've tried to change over gradually, but not feeling too well. This hot weather doesn't help.

How are you getting on with it?

Hi Nessy, Some people are fine with the new formula. Hopefully you'll be one of them.

I suggest that you watch out for signs of being overmedicated. If so cut back, maybe to about half your previous amount for a bit and if that helps then raise gradually until you find your new level.

Thanks didn’t feel too good this morning so I’ll take tomorrow instead too agitated could just be getting used to new table & hoping it helps. I’ll probably get Metavive 1 the next time but thought 2 be better. It’s hard to know when you don’t know how much are in them. Hope you feel better soon on the new one. Were you on the Thai one before or Levo? X

Give it time. But if you feel overmedicated don't leave it too long before you reduce your dose.

Metavive 1 is a half dose of Metavive 2, that's all we can tell. I always prefer to buy a smaller one so that I can fine tune my dose. I think at first I bought both so that I could make up my total with them, but ended up only buying M1.

I had levo when originally diagnosed, but did my homework and soon realised that I wasn't converting well and went in search of someone who would prescribe NDT for me to try. I also know that it's important to have vitamins and minerals optimal, so I don't like advisers who tell me to take supplements without testing to make sure of what I need. It seems a long story now that you ask!

I started M1 when I saw Dr Peatfield who is now retired. I was on another NDT before that, but finding it difficult getting a prescription for it. Metavive doesn't need a prescription. He also advised taking meds with food.

I was nicely settled on the old Metavive 1, then along comes the new one without any option to stick with the old version. Grrrr... Can't they leave us alone when we are doing OK? Currently trying a Thai version and trying to change over gradually.

Just did a search to find out how people were finding the new Metavive. Disheartened to hear people not getting the same results. I notice this post was a month ago - any improvement anyone?!

Nessy50 I have now been on metavive for 5 weeks and doing great on it. I ran out of thai ndt so had to take the plunge. Good luck, just take it slow, I managed to overmedicate myself!

Glad you’re doing well on it, I felt that a few days but could be something else I’m back on iron tablets because I think that’s dropped but won’t get bloods checked til February.

Hi reliablerebelJust switching to Metavive could you tell me your dosage i was on 3 Thyroid S a day but would forgot so maybe more like 2.75 grain per day after taking only 2 TS a day for 10 days i am taking 1 TS and 2 metavive II. Been only 6 days now but feeling a tingling around my mouth.. And wondering why being Hypo or hyper... Would like to keep switching but not sure how to proceed and would be grateful for some advice.

Starsw I was on 3 thiroyd. Now on 2 metavive11. I tried 3 metavive11 but became overmedicated. I have now been on metavive11 for nearly six weeks and plan to do bloods in the next week or so. I expect they might show I need to raise a little, if so I will buy metavive1 and add one of those. But I feel great at the moment, so will wait and see what the bloods say.I think a lot of people do not realise that with T3 containing meds like ndt, you need to keep the same dose every day - it is very hard to stabilise levels if you say forget a dose. I work shifts and would never remember to take my meds if I split them into two or three doses. So I take mine once a day at 7am, either going to bed after a night shift, or getting up for the day one. Especially when you are trying to find a new dose with a different type of ndt/glandular.

I am not sure if my thai thiroyd was weaker than I thought, or if metavive11 is stronger than I thought it would be. All my other ducks are in a row, took me years to sort cortisol/adrenal issues, iron etc - so I know that those are in good shape.

I use my resting heart rate as a good measure of under/overmedication. I have a fitbit, and it automatically measures my rhr daily. There is a definite pattern of higher rhr showing overmedication, and lower rhr showing undermedication. For me the symptoms of overmedication are insomnia, sensitive skin and increased rhr. The symptoms of undermedication are far more subtle, and it takes a long time for me to realise I am undermedicated. But we are all so different!!

I never had tingling round my mouth. Some people swear by taking their temp every morning, that never worked for me as i work such strange shifts. Not sure I have helped you any!!

You have helped enormously thank you so much for sharing your experience I think the difficulty is as you said you can realised fairly quickly that you are overmedicated but when you are undermedicated it takes a few weeks. I was feeling a little bit out of sort the last few days so this morning I took 1 thyroid S and 1 Metavive II and plan to take 1 Metavive I at 5.30 PM will try to do that for the next 10 days and then try to switch to take 2 Metavives II and 1 metavive I in the evening if I notice I feel too tired I may take 2metavive II and 1 Metavive I in the morning and 1 metavive I in the evening I felt sleepy the last 3 days but not today while I took less lol so it may be that my body needs to adjust to it will post for updates. Do you take both metavive ii at the same time or split the dose?

I've been forced onto metavive as my Thiroid ran out and I used to take 2 in the morning and 1 at lunch

Yes I take mine in one dose. Always have as I work shifts so its easy to remember 7am either getting up or going to bed. But different things work for different folks. I would suggest using metavive1 and 11 - it is easier to titrate your dose if you buy the metavive1 a well as the 11. No difference in cost, but its difficult to "split" capsules full of powder - it was much easier to split one grain of thiroyd. Good luck x

Thanks for this info. I’m not doing great at the moment but that may be having had a cold and the start of winter. Would be interested to see how your bloods look on Metavive.🙂

Sandi sorry you’re not doing great but probably partly down to your cold. Have you had your vitamins tested? I’m b12d too although that’s sorted now & also coeliac. Hope things improve for you soon. X

I am just being switched to Metavive and feel quite anxious. Was on Levo then switched to Armour after seeing lovely Dr P, was finding Armour so expensive that I switched again to Thyroid S. I had my bloods in a relatively good order (apart from RT3) and my energy levels are good. Any sage words of advice🙏

What metavive did you get? I am on thyroid s and my t3 is slightly raised, I can’t seem to get the perfect dose at the mo, as this is now impossible to Source I Am looking To try metavive But can’t decide on pork or beef. I would love any advice that anyone can give x

I think pork thyroid has a slightly higher T3 to T4 ratio than beef thyroid.

You are correct, some people find they do better on the bovine than the porcine metavive. I suspect I may be one, I react quite strongly to T3. There is more T3 in the porcine metavive, and more T4 in the bovine.
