Daughter 9 month pregnancy

Dear friends of Thyroid UK.

Can I please ask your advice & wisdom

My daughter is due date is on the 12th of July.

Being under the diseases & disorders clinic @ the anti natal hospital.

Her blood test taken on the 11th of May results indicated that the her medication was too high on 75 mcg of Levo.

Daughter also has Hashimotos

Her TSh was 0.29 range 0.30-5.00

Free T4 15.8 range 11.0-22.0

This was reduced to 50mcg.

Since then she has developed gestation diabetes which was borderline.

Her White cell count was high 11.2 range 3.9 -11.1.

The has been a lot of emotional stress as my daughter has moved from a British oversea territory.

Previous tests there for T4 was high @ 14.3

FT3 2.3.

Glucose intolerance test was normal @ 28 weeks.

My question as her mother & a Hashimotos sufferer also. I can see that apart from the pregnancy that I recognise a slide in her anxiety & emotional state.

Does the results warrant a reduction in the medication by 25%?

Also they want to induce on Saturday ?

Based on the gestation diabetes.

Many thanks for any thoughts

I'm not up on the pregnancy issues but her fT4 seems below average not high. You haven't given the reference interval for fT3 but 2.3 looks a low figure to me. The TSH of 0.29 suggests mild pituitary failure rather than too much thyroid hormone. Perhaps they should measure TSH, fT3, fT4 again along with other pituitary and sex hormones.

Your poor daughter! You are NOT over-medicated if your TSH is under-range. On the higher level of levo her free T4 was a moderately pathetic 43.6% through range - and they've reduced it rather than increased. She really needs it in the top third of the range to feel well. She is only over-medicated if free T3 is over-range - and I suspect that's highly unlikely. Probably less than half-way through as well.

Her Ft4 was only 43% through range

Suggests she needed dose increase

Please add ranges on Ft3 ...looks very low

Essential to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

When were these last tested?

Fortunately baby has its own thyroid

Very frustrating as my daughter has been fine until the medication was reduced & gestational diabetes has set in. Basing all of this on wanting to induce her.

Ranges for T3 are 2.3 4.2 ph/ml

Daughters results are 2.3 so borderline?

Far to low

Get her vitamins tested

Oh my goodness! Absolutely not! She was not overmedicated just because the TSH was too low (suppressed).

Her FT4 and FT3 look very low. With even lower dose of medication she will fall below range! If anything I’d say she needed a dose increase.

Gets me every time how incompetent doctors are playing with mothers and unborn babies lives! Outrageous.

Thank you so much 🙏

It seems or is it such a coincidence that since she has had her medication reduced that problems with gestational diabetes has reared its ugly head.

My pleasure 💖

Could well be why she’s unwell now... 😞 I was pregnant for the first time back in 2019 and also with Hashimoto so I know how stressful it is all too well...

Will your daughter come back to 75 Levo? Think she should. In fact, just like others I think she needs 100. But maybe leave that for once the baby is here 🙂

Late pregnancy is also not the time for dosage changes. I’m glad someone picked on her only so late when she’s pretty much at the finish line, since if her dose was reduced to only 50 in the early days it could have had consequences on her pregnancy.

Exactly my thoughts

The diabetic markers may diminish if she increases her dose after the birth (I honestly don't understand why her dose was lowered) and takes Magnesium which has helped regulate my blood sugar. If you're quite hypo, Magnesium is hard to absorb from tablets, so it's a good idea to get hold of the lotion or gel which can get Magnesium into the skin - very good for cramps and muscle pain; also Epsom Salt baths. Another thing that can help with pre-diabetes is Chromium, but it competes with Selenium in the body and it may not be suitable during pregnancy. Maybe call a nutritionist from a reputable company like Biocare or Igennus for advice.

Thank you. Yes I agree on the lowering of the dose. Just had bloods done again today, all results not there but the TSH has come back higher now 3.05.

That’s not good news. The TSH in pregnancy shouldtbe higher than 2.5

Best request a second opinion - they've completely messed up.

I think your daughter has been under dosed but she is now near the end and after the birth make sure she gets the right treatment.

I'm so sorry to read that your daughters poor thyroid treatment has caused such problems and added to her understandable distress and anxiety...I wish they would learn more about the thyroid before they make these crazy decisions. You've had some good advice on here, and as others have said, thank goodness their incompetence was only excecuted towards the end of the pregnancy, when the baby has their own thyroid output.

Still, your daughters low levels of T4 and particularly T3 must have caused great mental anguish for her, as if she didn't have enough to contend with already! I'm sure all will be well today and your daughters health will improve...one of my daughters had gestational diabetes, and her sugar levels plummeted after the birth and she was fine. Hopefully that will be the case here, especially when her thyroid levels are improved! She must be a strong person to get through all this. Wishing you both lots of luck and happiness for the future✨ x
