Hopefully someone can help me. My daughter (28 years old) has just had her results from a thyroid test 5.4. She was told the range was 0.4 - 5.5. She is massively overweight but her glucose test is ok. She has also has a range of other symptoms that point to a thyroid problem. Does anyone else think this result is very high and should be looked into?

Daughter is unwell
Yes this suggests she possibly has thyroid problem. She needs more than just TSH tested. Ask GP for further tests to recheck. Need Thyroid antibodies testing, plus FT3 and FT4. NHS rarely do FT3
Also test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 as these are very commonly too low. They can be causing problems in their own right and/or upsetting thyroid too
If you can't get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.
All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting.
(If she happened to be taking any supplements with biotin in- eg Vitamin B complex then must stop these 3-5 days before any blood tests. Biotin can falsely affect test results
Thankyou so much, I will get onto this today. There's 9 close family members who have a thyroid problem! Plus we live in Derbyshire 😊
I don't know why I thought of this - but do you have fluoride added to water in your area? Fluoride is not good for underactive thyroids. I gather it was once used to treat overactive thyroids.
Also avoid fluoride toothpastes etc.
Just a thought.
I totally agree with SlowDragon. Your daughter needs testing and treatment.
Consider also that a normal glucose reading doesn't mean she is in the clear because it's possible that a very unhealthy level of insulin is being produced to maintain that ok glucose reading.
