Lump in throat feeling post surgery

Hi all, I had a hemithyroidectomy at the beginning of November last year to remove a large benign single nodule. I’ve never been diagnosed with any thyroid condition but my thyroid function has always been sluggish.

Since the op I’ve had a weird lump in throat feeling which gets worse when I exercise, which is bizarre because the lump has gone! It’s not painful, just feels like I’ve got a lump. And when I actually had a lump I didn’t have that feeling, but it did cause coughing, breathlessness etc, which has now gone. Is this normal or something other people have experienced?

FYI, my thyroid function, although within range, wasn’t good and was worse than normal for me so at Christmas I started taking 1 tablet of Metavive I a day (partially on the advice of a private GP I see who prescribes me natural progesterone, she also is a holistic doctor and has an interest in thryoid problems). Once I’ve been taking it for 6 weeks I’ll get some bloods done and post the results pre and post taking the tabs here and see what people think. In the meantime, I’m interested to see if this lump in the throat feeling is to be expected? Thanks in advance!

Many people experience "lump in throat" sensation when hypothyroid......or with low FT3

Important to test thyroid and vitamins

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

You may need to get full Thyroid testing privately as NHS refuses to test TG antibodies if TPO antibodies are negative

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose Metavive 12 hours prior to blood test

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Thanks, that’s interesting. My T3 is never particularly high, but I’ve not had this sensation before the surgery, it’s only since then. I had my vitamins tested 6 weeks post surgery and they were all mid to high range apart from ferritin which was a little low, so I’ve upped my dose since then. I’ll post my next blood test results when I do them in a couple of weeks.

It may take several more months for everything to calm down. Such operations exert enormous challenges to the body. The ideal result for you would be that your remaining thyroid tissues start operating in the normal fashion, in which case you will not require any medication, especially the dreaded levothyroxine.
