Daughters B12 result

My daughters result came back as

Serum ferritin 24 ug/L

Range 15.00 - 300.00 ug/L

Serum folate 6 ug/L

Range 》3.00ug/L

Serum vitamin B12 114 ng/L

Range 130.00 - 900.00ng/L

The doctor over the phone gave her a prescription for Cyanocobalamin 50mcg tabs twice a day.

My nephews B12 was slightly higher than this and started on the injections straight away. I feel this is the root which should have been taken with my daughter who is 18 years old. She is tired all the time has had weight loss despite a good diet.

Can so please give me some advice as I feel she should see a different doctor.

Suggest you post on PAS healthunlocked

They are the experts on B12

NHS is trying to force B12 patients onto tablets instead of injections

Many patients will need B12 injections not tablets

Her folate and ferritin are both very low too

GP should run full iron panel testing for Anaemia. If iron is low she will need iron supplements

As her folate is within range GP unlikely prescribe folic acid

Supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be beneficial.

B vitamins best taken in the morning after breakfast

Igennus Super B complex are nice small tablets. Often only need one tablet per day, not two. Certainly only start with one tablet per day after breakfast. Retesting levels in 6-8 weeks

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

She should definitely have full testing for Pernicious Anaemia with B12 result that low

Does your nephew have PA?

Her ferritin is very low

Her MCH and MCV are out of range - this suggests she's Anaemic and probably needs iron supplements

Yes see GP

Request vitamin D test and full thyroid

Is she hypothyroid?

How old is she?

Does she have heavy periods ?

Ask that thyroid levels are tested

TSH, Ft4 and FT3 plus Tpo and TG thyroid antibodies
