Minor victory ... yay!

My last post told of my Vitamin D and Ferritin being stopped - the receptionist at my GP surgery phoned me to tell my that I didn’t need them any more (based on an 18 month old blood test).

Fast forward to me finally making a GP appointment to argue this. I was told ‘I’m not here to fight you’. And yet, after insisting on a new blood test, I’ve been put back on both of these!

So, they may not be there to fight me but it’s still a battle!

This ‘battle’ has probably cost the NHS around £100 In appointments and blood test etc, cost me a few hours’ work and caused needless extra hassle all round.

The moral seems to be to keep fighting for what we know makes us more well!

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results

If you were on adequate dose of vitamin D the test should have been above range ....the fact you are still getting vitamin D prescribed by GP would mean results must be below range and dose must be inadequate

How much vitamin D does GP prescribe?

Aiming to improve by self supplementing to at least 80nmol and around 100nmol may be better .

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

etesting twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is good as avoids poor gut function.

It's trial and error what dose each person needs.

Do you have Hashimoto's?

Frequently with Hashimoto's we need higher dose than average

I have issues getting copies of my blood test results from my surgery. £10 charge or free if you wait 30 days 😡. Finally got them to agree to test me for PA today but went to Holland & Barrett’s anyway and bought the B12 spray and liquid magnesium as I have had gastric issues recently and had to take Gaviscon. Fingers crossed for the results.

I though charging was now illegal ten quid fir a sheet of paper and a bit of ink is outrageous

I log into my medical records which are online at my Doctors surgery. You are entitled to view all of your results free of charge because that is the law. As for paying £10 your surgery is not allowed to do that and if you logged in they wouldn't have to charge that extortionate price for a piece of paper! I would be making a complaint to them if I was her.

They got really argumentative. We do have on-line access but they will only let you see certain things. They said I could have them for free if I waited 30 days. Not sure what to do. Is it definite in law that they have to give them you or have they made this 30 days rule up?

It is an illegal requirement:

How long do we have to comply?

You must comply with a request without undue delay and at the latest within one month of receipt of the request or (if later) within one month of receipt of:

any requested information to clarify the request (see Can we clarify the request?);

any information requested to confirm the requester’s identity (see Can we ask for ID?); or

a fee (only in certain circumstances – see Can we charge a fee?)

You should calculate the time limit from the day you receive the request (whether it is a working day or not) until the corresponding calendar date in the next month.

ico.org.uk/for-organisation...

Any unnecessary delay is, in my view, undue. If they could do it if you pay but not if you don't that is laughing in the face of the law.

They cannot apply a 30 day rule - because it would not work in February. The one month rule says, for example 3rd of December request has to be fulfilled by 3rd January. But a request on 30th January has to be fulfilled by 28th February (29th in a leap year).

Further, refusing to supply without charge until after 30 days is requiring you to be complicit in their refusal to comply with the law.

it may be that you could use a different online access. i was signed up for MyGP on the advice of the surgery, but it only did appointments. A colleague showed me Patient Access for same surgery. i think i had to unregister from My Dr then i hadt have assistance from the online guru at the surgery . i still dontsee eveything, but i do see test results (fr thyroid tests its next day)

They have made it up ...

Treepie profile image

The 30 days is made up. There are issues with GOs being asked for records from solicitors and insurers becoming burdensome and some can be charged . But an individual asking for their test records should have access on line by now but if not a free printed copy when asked for.

Thanks for the reply. GP didn’t test Vitamin D but agreed that my thyroid added to my sun allergy were good enough grounds to continue it - 800iu daily.

Ferritin was 74 so I emailed them to say if my level isn’t quite where I want it when I’m taking the supplement surely they shouldn’t stop it - and they reinstated it!😳😃

Never tested for Hashi’s but I think so.

I feel pretty well at the moment, although gut function has gone backwards again this last month or so, and my temp regulation is going a bit haywire.

800iu isn't enough vit D to raise the levels on a flea. You'll need to buy your own or refer GP to NICE guide;lines if your level is really low.

The 800iu is the maintenance dose I’ve been on for about 18 months. I do need to get my level checked I guess but as I feel fine I’ve just stayed on it. x

I never bother at GP for vitamins etc I have them done through Medichecks. I buy my own vitamins as I can see no reason why the NHS should have to pay. If you did not have a medical exemption certificate and had a choice I am sure you would buy over the counter rather than pay a prescription charge. Most of the population are given a loading dose for Vit D from GP, then they buy over the counter. I know that many will not agree with me, it is a matter of personal choice.

Not sure what difference the tiny dose you have been given will make if you are deficient. I would want to see test results and decide for myself but then I find I know best about my thyroid these days and so look at the bigger picture on lots of things. Good luck.

I let my GP prescribe them because I was misdiagnosed and put on HRT for 2 years. I got so unwell for so long and lost months and months of work.

The current doses seem to work, I’ve got my TSH suppressed (touch wood) and if GP prescribes the vitamins they can take responsibility for monitoring my levels rather than me making a mess of it!

Miffie profile image
Miffie in reply to Jooju2004

As I say personal choice.

Jooju2004 profile image
Jooju2004 in reply to Miffie

It is. I think I said in a previous post, if my GP had said ‘we no longer want to fund these but recommend you buy them’ I would’ve simply followed their advice, but they told me I didn’t need them so I felt I had a point to prove😊 x
