Afternoon my lovelies, I have an under active thyroid but have been feeling down and feed up so have tried to get ontop of my health with some independent test..so in additional to my thyroid do i have any other concerns..?
so I have had more blood test as suggested ... so I asked for a copy of the results and I don't understand them...they have changed the measure and there is not tolerance included so i'm completely at a loss... wanted to do some ground work so the doctors appoint is the normal car crash...my independent bloods showed my B12 38.800pmol, Folate 4.49ug/l, Vitamin d was 44nmo/l, ferritin 22.3ug/l were extremely low... I just wondered if I need to go back to have a discussion of if its all in head and i just need to get on with it
latest results are attached :
serium folate 3.8ug/l
vitamin B12 = 319 ng/l
Serum ferritin 20 ng/ml

Independent test - B12 38.800pmol - this was Active B12 with a range of 37.5 - 188
Latest test - B12 = 319 ng/l - this is Total B 12 and they can't be compared, they are a different test. Total B12 includes measurement of both bound and unbound (active) B12. But this is still low as Total B12 should lbe over 550ng/L (or pg/ml which is the same).
However, it's the Active B12 which is the better test. Did you follow the suggestion given in reply to your previous post about further testing for B12 deficiency and pernicious anaemia?
Folate
Independent test - Foate 4.49ug/ (Range: > 3.89)
Latest test - Folate 3.8ug/l - although there is no range the unit of measurement is the same and is lower now than before so this could be folate deficiency. You should not supplement anything for this untl further testing of B12 has been carried out.
Ferritin
Independent test - ferritin 22.3ug/l (Range: 13 - 150)
Latest test - ferritin 20 ng/ml - again no range but it should be fairly similar to the independent test and again you are lower than before.
It's not possible to comment on your iron panel in your latest tests because there are no ranges.
All comments given in response to you previous post still apply. There's no way you're going to feel well with these levels.
thank you and i was lost and a little uncomfortable without any range to help the common people see what the tolerances are and how you measure..?
so do you think that I asked for the wrong thing or will the doctor have the reference ranges from the lab and its part of there process to limit information?
Yes , those were my "independent tests" that I had posted previously ..these were the trigger to the doctors for further help..
I was following your suggestion and my 2 appointments resulted in a full set of blood test to double check as the first appointment she wasn't having any of it said it was all fine and i didn't look ill or deficient to her!! ..the second visit was a second full set of blood to have another look, that were I am now.. I have not taken not victims until I get the correct picture as suggested, didn't want to create a false negative.
Thank you for the support, and confirming that the issue are still there and not in my head , I was just checking I needed to go back as they make you feel so stupid. I thought it was bizarre but then I should be surprised.
"so do you think that I asked for the wrong thing or will the doctor have the reference ranges from the lab and its part of there process to limit information?"
I don't know how they do it at your surgery. At mine I ask for a print out of my results and the reference ranges are always on the sheet. The reference ranges are somewhere, one would assume that they come with the tests, so you could ask the receptionist for the ranges, if they're not available to your doctor then maybe ask them to contact the lab for them.
Thank you and I think from my experience they only ever deal with issues in isolation but this gives me leverage to link them and argue that should he optimum to get the best options of health ....
Self supplementing is likely the best way to improve vitamin D, folate and B12 as detailed by SeasideSusie
Rather than trying to get GP to treat
With the exception of ferritin, which is complex and should only supplement iron if GP does full iron panel that shows Anaemia. You can have low ferritin and normal iron levels
