Latest Blood Results (Thyroid & Iron)... Thoughts On Levels Gratefully Appreciated 😊

β€’10 Replies

I would be most grateful if anyone in the know, could confirm whether my latest blood results are optimum? To me, they seem to be. I self medicate with NDT.

In regards to my iron levels, they claim to be within normal range, but I have been noticing my hair getting thinner of late, so I'm not sure if the ferritin and folate are at an optimum level or not. I've read thyroid hair thinning could be due to lower iron levels.

Below are my results:

Ferritin: 74.6ug/l Norm Range: 10.0 - 250.0 Folate: 13.8ug/l Norm Range: 3.0 - 20.0

Free T3: 7.6 pmol/L Norm Range: 4.0 - 7.0 Free T4: 21 pmol/L Norm Range: 10 - 25 TSH: < 0.02 mU/L Norm Range: 0.55 - 4.78

Thank you!

Well, you don't need a medical degree to see that that ferritin result is in-range. That's pretty obvious. But, look at the width of that range! It's rediculous. How can you possible feel the same with a result of 10.5 as you would with a result of 249.5? It's rediculous. You really want your ferritin over mid-range. Which would be 130. So, yes, yours is low. Sub-optimal. But, before supplementing, it would be good to know what your serum iron is. Although, you could start eating liver once a week, which is rich in iron, and should bring your level up a bit.

As for your thyroid results, optimal is not a number, it's the way you feel. Do you feel good? If so, your labs are good for you. :)

Thanks for replying... I pretty much knew my thyroid levels to be ok. I feel alright, so I shall keep to my dosage for now. As for iron, I suspected that I wasn't totally optimum even though it states to be in range... I know you have to be careful with iron levels and so I didn't want to be supplementing without caution. A few sprays of iron will suffice as I find liver rather revolting to me unfortunately.

How about black pudding?

in reply to greygoose

Mmm! Afraid not! Spinach I like, that has iron in it, probably not as much as the liver and black pudding though. πŸ˜„

Yes, there's iron in spinach, but the human gut can't absorb it. So, that won't do you much good. Don't like liver pΓ’tΓ©, either?

Yes, in small amounts. I've found a good source of iron in spray form, so I will supplement with that as well as in my diet.

Hi What iron spray do you use ? Has it shown improvements in the past. Also have struggles with iron - a sign that I always have that it is to low is my hair starts falling out .

I haven't really used any yet, apart from previously and sparodically using a multivitamin with a small amount of iron in it. I stopped taking that tablet after I learned it had hidden gluten fillers in it. I have bought 'BetterYou' Iron spray from Boots. It is gluten and soya free, and more natural than others over the counter. I am hoping this will help as I've already ruined a well branded vacuum cleaner with all my hair trapped in it 😟. You may want to supplement with Biotin as well. I've recently read that 1000mg of Biotin daily is supposed to help with hair loss.

Best of luck, maybe we'll soon have long luscious locks πŸ˜„... Where there's hope, there's happiness 😁!!

MapleMoose A few people have told me its not so good(for liver) but I have in the past had iron injections - in fact I had one a couple of weeks ago - hair has stopped falling out straight away. Energy increased as well.

Not sure if GP will do it in UK . Wishing you luscious locks as well.:-)
